Hera Gallery
Hera Gallery is a small, non-profit artist cooperative in Wakefield, Rhode Island USA. Created within the context of the feminist art movement, Hera Gallery was a pioneer in the genesis of artist-run spaces. Its founding objective in 1974 was to provide a venue for women artists, under-represented at the time in commercial galleries. As the cultural climate changed in the 1980s, the gallery broadened its scope to include visual artists of both genders. Concurrently, Hera curated more topical exhibitions with a broadened spectrum of social awareness and activism. To this day, the gallery provides contemporary artists with the opportunity to address cultural, social, and political issues and to maintain creative control. An artist cooperative (also co-operative or co-op) is an autonomous visual arts organization, enterprise, or association jointly owned and democratically controlled by its members. Artist cooperatives are legal entities organized as non-capital stock corporations, non-profit organizations, or unincorporated associations. Such cooperatives typically provide professional facilities and services for its artist-members, including studios, workshops, equipment, exhibition galleries, and educational resources. Italo Scanga
Italo Scanga (June 6, 1932 - July 7, 2001), an Italy, Italian-born List of American artists, American artist, was known for his sculptures, prints and, paintings, mostly created from found objects. Career Italo Scanga was an innovative neo-Dadaist, neo-Expressionist, and neo-Cubist multimedia artist who made sculptures of ordinary objects and created prints, glass, and ceramic works. Scanga's materials included natural objects like branches and seashells, as well as kitsch figurines, castoff musical instruments and decorative trinkets salvaged from flea markets and thrift shops. He combined these ingredients into free-standing assemblages, which he then painted. Roberta Richman
Roberta Richman is an artist, former corrections administrator, and founding member of the arts organization Hera Gallery located in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Work Corrections Richman is known as an advocate for prisoner reentry and reform of conditions for female offenders. She worked in corrections for 33 years before retiring in 2012. She began coordinating arts programs for the incarcerated, and would eventually serve as warden of the Adult Correctional Institutions' Women's Facilities in Rhode Island for 10 years. She later served as Director of Rehabilitative Services. In retirement, she continues to advocate for the rights of the incarcerated and currently serves on the board of directors at the Nonviolence Institute in Providence, Rhode Island. She also serves as interim director and board member of Welcome House, an emergency shelter for people living in Washington County, Rhode Island. Susan Weil
Susan Weil (born March 31, 1930) is an American artist best known for her experimental three-dimensional paintings, which combine figurative illustration with explorations of movement and space. Life and career Weil was born in New York City. In the late 1940s she was involved in a relationship with Robert Rauschenberg. The two met while attending the Académie Julian in Paris, and in 1948 both attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina to study under Josef Albers. In 1949 Weil introduced Rauschenberg to a technique for making cyanotypes, also known as blueprints, which she had learned in childhood, and they collaborated on a number of these works over a period of several years. Carolee Schneeman
Carolee Schneemann (October 12, 1939 – March 6, 2019) was an American visual artist, visual experimental artist, known for her multi-media works on the body, narrative, human sexuality, sexuality and gender. She received a Bachelor of Arts, B.A. in poetry and philosophy from Bard College and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois. Originally a painter in the Abstract Expressionist tradition, Schneeman was uninterested in the masculine heroism of New York painters of the time and turned to performance-based work, primarily characterized by research into visual traditions, taboos, and the body of the individual in relation to social bodies.
