William Steele (actor)
William Anton Gittinger (March 28, 1888 – February 13, 1966), best known as William Steele, was an American actor of small roles in Westerns, particularly those of John Ford. Biography Although his screen credits and many records indicate a wide variety of names and spellings, Steele's own signatures on his military documents indicate that he was born William Anton Gittinger on March 28, 1888 (not 1889, as some sources have it) in San Antonio, Texas. Little is known of his life prior to his arrival in Los Angeles around 1910. As the film industry in Hollywood was just blossoming, and as he apparently had great experience with horses, Steele easily obtained work in quickie Westerns. He fought in Europe in World War I, then returned to Hollywood. While he was extremely inconsistent in the names he used, he worked consistently in Westerns throughout the silent era and up until the 1950s. Julia Crawford Ivers
Julia Crawford Ivers (October 3, 1869 – May 8, 1930) was an American motion picture pioneer. Biography Born in Boonville, Missouri, in 1869, her family arrived a year later in Los Angeles. Her father was a dentist. Her mother died in 1876, when Julia was seven years old. Julia's sister, Grace, died at age 14. Ivers watched the film industry come into existence and establish itself in southern California. She participated in the new industry as writer, producer and director. She and her husband, Franklin S. Van Trees (aka Frank Van Trees 1866 – 1914), a famed "society" architect best known for his mansions in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco, had a son, James Van Trees (1890 – 1973), who became a popular cinematographer for Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. and shot some of his mother's films. William Winter Jefferson (April 6, 1876 February 11, 1946) was an actor in silent films. Early life Jefferson was born in London to Sarah and Joseph Jefferson, an actor. He initially studied in Germany to become a medical doctor, but decided to pursue an acting career like his father, instead. He was elected to The Lambs in 1896. Career Jefferson starred in the 1913 film ''Wanted by the Police'', for which he earned positive reviews. He was one of the leads in the Keystone comedy '' Bright Lights.'' Personal life He was married to actress Christie MacDonald, then to actress Vivian Martin in 1913. After retiring from acting, he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1928. He married his wife Mary in Honolulu in 1936. Death Jefferson died in Honolulu on February 11, 1946.
