''Her Mad Bargain'' is a 1921 American drama film directed by Edwin Carewe and written by Josephine Quirk. The film stars Anita Stewart, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Helen Raymond, Adele Farrington, Margaret McWade, and Percy Challenger. Plot As described in a film magazine, Alice Lambert (Stewart), after spending ten years in idleness and luxury, finds herself without funds and must make her way in the world. She becomes a cloak model, but the proprietor of the shop proves to be a despicable character and she leaves when he attempts to embrace her. She next secures work as an artist's model, but flees from the studio half clad when the artist attempts to make violent love to her. She seeks refuge in another studio belonging to artist David Leighton (McGrail), who prevents her suicide by offering to loan her $50,000. Edwin Carewe
Edwin Carewe (March 3, 1883 – January 22, 1940) was an American motion picture director, actor, producer, and screenwriter. His birth name was Jay John Fox; he was born in Gainesville, Texas. Career After brief studies at the Universities of Texas and Missouri and a period of work with regional theatrical groups, Carewe moved to New York City in 1910, where he became a member of the Dearborn Stock Company. Although Jay Fox was his given name, Carewe chose Edwin (from stage actor Edwin Booth) and Carewe from a character he was playing. Carewe was on stage as an actor before he worked for Lubin studios. Later, he directed films for MGM, First National Pictures, First National, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and United Artists. During his career, he provided early screen exposure to many actors such as Dolores del Río, Warner Baxter, Francis X. Bushman and Gary Cooper. Gertrude Astor (born Gertrude Irene Eyster; November 9, 1887 – November 9, 1977) was an American motion picture character actress, who began her career playing trombone in a woman's band. Early years Gertrude Irene Eyster was born in Lakewood, Ohio, to a working-class family of German descent. Her father was Glen Eyster, an assistant fire chief in Lima, Ohio. Career Astor joined a woman's band as a trombone player and toured the states. In New York she left the band to obtain film work and got a job as an extra before her career took off. In 1915, Astor gained a contract with Universal Studios. Between then and 1962, she appeared in over 250 movies. Her first known credit is in a Biograph short in 1915. Percy Challenger (September 3, 1858 – July 23, 1932) was a film and theater actor in the United States. He appeared in dozens of films. He was born in England. He acted in and managed the eastern tour of Virginia Drew Prescott (Melbourne MacDowell)'s playlet ''Man of the People''. Challenger was a vaudeville actor. A 1911 performance in Chicago was reviewed by ''The Billboard'', reading, "Percy Challenger, an English entertainer, was first on the program, and although his act was rather odd, it seemed to take very well. Mr. Challenger's work as an elocutionist was very good". He won plaudits as a supporting actor in films. His performance in ''Flames of Chance'' (1918) was received as "clever" in a review in ''Variety''.
