Henry Spalding (architect)
Henry Spalding (4 Sept 1838 – 25 Jun 1910) was a British architect. Spalding was an assistant for William Gilbee Habershon and Edward Habershon from 1857 to 1863. He was in partnership with Samuel Knight (architect) and then went on to establish his own practice with Edward Haberson and later went into partnership with Patrick Auld, Alfred William Stephens Cross and his son Reginald Henry Spalding. His buildings include Dulwich Public Baths Dulwich Public Baths (also Dulwich Leisure Centre) is a swimming pool and gym in Dulwich, South London. Edward Habershon (architect)
Matthew Edward Habershon (18 July 1826 – 18 August 1900), known as Edward Habershon, was an architect practising in London and south-east England. He specialised in neo-gothic buildings, especially churches and chapels. With his brother W.G. Habershon he designed St John the Baptist's Church, Hove, now a Grade II building. With E.P.L. Brock he designed a number of churches including St Leonards-on-Sea Congregational Church, also listed at Grade II. He designed St Andrews church in Hastings, where Robert Tressell's large mural (now in Hastings Museum) was created. In 1862 he was involved in the relocation of London's burial grounds, moving more than one thousand hundredweight of human remains. Samuel Knight (1834–1911) was a British architect practising from Cornhill Chambers, 62 Cornhill, London EC and later 175 and 176 Temple Chambers, Tudor Street, London EC. Early life Knight was born in Exeter on 3 September 1834 to Samuel Knight and Mary Boalch Anning., living in his early life at Summerland Street, St Sidwell, Exeter. His paternal grandfather (Lewis) was also a stonemason. Alfred William Stephens Cross (1858–1932) was a British architect. From 1889 to 1899 he was in partnership with Henry Spalding as Spalding and Cross, taking part in many competitions for building design. Cross and his son (Kenneth Mervyn Baskerville Cross, 1890–1968) became specialised in designs for public baths. Dulwich Public Baths (also Dulwich Leisure Centre) is a swimming pool and gym in Dulwich, South London. It opened in 1892, and is London's oldest public baths to have remained in continuous operation. The baths are listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. Description The original sign of "Dulwich Public Baths" is on the front of the building though there has been significant, if sympathetic, redevelopment inside. There are two original entrances on the front separating men and women. The entrance is raised using steps up to the main doors to provide a high basement where a laundry was originally in operation. The main pool was boarded over in 1982 (now the main gym area) leaving the second pool still in operation. History The Baths opened to the public on 25 June 1892. Camberwell Public Baths (also ''Camberwell Baths'' and recently ''Camberwell Leisure Centre'') opened in 1892 and has been in continuous operation as publicly funded community baths and more recently as a public leisure centre. Description Originally the ''Camberwell Public Baths'', the building is now known as the ''Camberwell Leisure Centre''. The facilities include a gym and swimming pool. The baths are managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Southwark Council. As well as swimming sessions, the centre offers swimming classes, badminton, personal training in the gym and caters for children's parties. One of the original two pools is boarded over and is now used as a sports hall.
