Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor
The Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor is a long string of adjoining conservation areas in the US state of Missouri, running along Interstate 44 and along the Meramec River. The corridor is named after Henry Shaw, founder of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor Foundation is an organization founded officially in 1994 to preserve the Ozark foothills along Interstate 44 and promote maintenance and expansion of the Ozark Corridor series of parks. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Generally speaking though, protected areas are understood to be those in which human presence or at least the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water, ...) is limited. Possum Woods Conservation Area
Possum Woods Conservation Area consists of in St. Louis County, Missouri. It is located in the city of Kirkwood at the intersection of Interstates 44 and 270. It is adjacent to Emmenegger Nature Park along the Meramec River and part of the Meramec Greenway and Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor. The area had been used at various times as an exotic animal breeding area for the St. Louis Zoo, a resort, public swimming pool, and tennis club. Shaw Nature Reserve
Shaw Nature Reserve, formerly known as Shaw Arboretum, is a private non-profit nature reserve located in Gray Summit, Missouri, that is operated as an extension of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The first piece of land, , was purchased in 1925 when pollution from coal smoke in St. Louis threatened the Garden's live plant collection, especially the orchid collection. The orchids were moved to what was then known as the Gray Summit Extension in 1926. The pollution in St. Louis decreased with the waning use of coal for heat, making it unnecessary to move the rest of the live plant collection. Route 66 State Park
Route 66 State Park is a public recreation area located on the Meramec River at the site of the former town of Times Beach, Missouri. The state park encompasses east of Eureka. History Times Beach was bought, dismantled, and decontaminated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency following the discovery of widespread dioxin contamination in the 1980s.
