Henry Schmidt (American Football)
Henry Joseph (Hank) Schmidt (September 28, 1935 – May 17, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the American Football League (AFL). Professional career Schmidt played collegiately at the University of Southern California and professionally between 1959 and 1966, starting with the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers and moving to the new American Football League's San Diego Chargers in 1961. He played on the Buffalo Bills 1965 AFL Champions in 1965, earning a place in that year's AFL All-Star Team. He finished his professional football career in 1966 with the AFL's New York Jets. He died on May 17, 2021, in La Mesa, California La Mesa () is a city in San Diego County, located east of Downtown San Diego in Southern California. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach.
