Henry R. Spicer
Henry Russell Spicer (February 16, 1909 – December 5, 1968) was a major general in the United States Air Force. He was a World War II fighter pilot and prisoner at Stalag Luft I. Early life and education Spicer was born on 16 February 1909 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He attended the University of Arizona and received a bachelor of science degree in economics in 1932. Army Air Corps Spicer joined the Army Air Corps 1n 1933 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1935. He was assigned to the 95th Pursuit Squadron at March Field near Riverside California. In 1936, he joined the 6th Pursuit Squadron at Wheeler Field, Honolulu, Hawaii. World War II In July 1942, Spicer was assigned as director of training at the Army Air Forces Training Command single-engine training school at Moore Field, Mission, Texas. Williams Air Force Base
Williams Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) base, located in Maricopa County, Arizona, east of Chandler, and about southeast of Phoenix. It is a designated Superfund site due to a number of soil and groundwater contaminants. It was active as a training base for both the United States Army Air Forces, as well as the USAF from 1941 until its closure in 1993. Williams was the leading pilot training facility of the USAF, supplying 25% of all pilots. Since its closure, the base has largely been annexed by the city of Mesa, Arizona. The United States Army Air Forces during World War II had major subordinate Commands below the Air Staff level. These Commands were organized along functional missions. One such Command was the Flying Training Command (FTC). The 6th Weapons Squadron is an active United States Air Force unit. It is assigned to the USAF Weapons School, based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. It was previously assigned to the Seventh Air Force, being inactivated at Yokota Airfield, Japan on 20 February 1947.
