Henry R. Harris
Henry Richard Harris (February 2, 1828 – October 15, 1909) was a U.S. Representative from Georgia. Born in Sparta, Georgia, Harris moved to Greenville, Georgia, in 1833. He attended an academy in Mount Zion, Georgia, and was graduated from Emory College at Oxford, Georgia, in 1847. He served as a member of the State constitutional convention in 1861. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate States Army as a colonel. Harris was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth, and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1873 – March 3, 1879). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1878 to the Forty-sixth Congress. Harris was elected to the Forty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1885 – March 3, 1887). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1886. He was appointed by President Cleveland as Third Assistant Postmaster General of the United States and served from April 1, 1887, to March 18, 1889. 46th United States Congress
The 46th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1879, to March 4, 1881, during the last two years of Rutherford Hayes's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Ninth Census of the United States in 1870. The Senate had a Democratic majority, while the House of Representatives had a Democratic plurality. The Democrats were still able to control the House, however, with the help of the Independent politicians who caucused with them. Hugh Buchanan (September 15, 1823 – June 11, 1890) was a Scottish-born American Cavalry officer during the American Civil War and U.S. Representative from Georgia. Biography Born in Argyll, Scotland Buchanan immigrated to the United States and settled in Vermont. He attended the public schools of that State. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Newnan, Georgia, in 1846. He served as member of the State senate in 1855 and 1857. He served as delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1856 and 1868. He served as presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Breckinridge and Lane in 1860. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate States Army in June 1861 and served until 1865. As Captain of Company D of the Phillips Georgia Legion Cavalry Battalion, he was wounded in the chest on June 11, 1864 at the Battle of Trevilian Station. Joseph "Henry" Persons (January 30, 1834 – June 17, 1910) was an American politician, lawyer and soldier. Early life Persons was born near Smarrs, Georgia, in Monroe County; however, his family moved to Talbot County, Georgia in 1836. He attended the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1855. Civil War During the American Civil War, Persons served as a cavalry captain in the Third Georgia regiment of the Confederate States Army.
