Henry Varnum Poor
Henry Varnum Poor (December 8, 1812 – January 4, 1905) was an American financial analyst and founder of H.V. and H.W. Poor Co, which later evolved into the financial research and analysis bellwether, Standard & Poor's. Biography Born in East Andover, Massachusetts (now Andover, Maine) to Sylvanus and Mary (Merrill) Poor, he was the first of his family to attend college, graduating from Bowdoin in 1835. He was descended from General Enoch Poor of the Revolutionary War. He joined his uncle's law firm, being called to the bar in 1838. Later Henry and his brother John established a law practice in Bangor, Maine. By investing money in Maine's growing timber industry, the Poor brothers made a fortune. John Poor became a minor railway magnate in association with the European and North American Railway, and was heavily involved in the building of the Maine rail network. Henry Varnum Poor (September 30, 1887 – December 8, 1970) was an American architect, painter, sculptor, muralist, and potter. He was a grandnephew of the Henry Varnum Poor who was a founder of the predecessor firm to Standard & Poor's. Biography He was born in Chapman, Kansas on September 30, 1887, to parents Alfred James Poor and Josephine Melinda Graham. Poor attended Stanford University, where he graduated with a A.B. degree in 1910. He studied painting at the Slade School in London and under painter Walter Sickert, then attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He returned to the United States in 1911 and taught art at Stanford University before moving to San Francisco to teach at the San Francisco Art Association. From July 1919 to October 1923 Poor was married to a former student from Stanford (and a later known textile designer), Marion Dorn. Henry William Poor (June 16, 1844 – April 13, 1915) was an American banker, stockbroker, and author. Biography Early life Henry William Poor was born in Bangor, Maine in 1844, the son of Henry Varnum Poor. The family moved to New York City when he was five years old, and he spent his youth there. He attended Harvard College, graduating in 1865. The firm that he and his father established in 1868, H. V. & H. W. Poor, was a predecessor to the business that eventually became Standard & Poor's. He married Constance Evelyn Brandon on February 4, 1880, and they had five children. Career He became prominent as a stockbroker and investor, but had to liquidate his business in 1908 following some major losses.

Henry Varnum Poor (January 7, 1914 - October 10, 1972) was an American intelligence officer and politician who became associate dean of the Yale Law School. Education and wartime service Born on January 7, 1914, in New York, Poor was the great-grandson of financier Henry Varnum Poor. He attended the Buckley School in New York and the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts, and received his undergraduate education from Harvard University, graduating in 1936. At Harvard, he was an editor of two literary magazines, and became Editorial Chairman of ''The Harvard Crimson''. He then worked as vice consul for the United States in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Johannesburg, South Africa, before returning to Washington, DC in 1938 to attend the Foreign Service Officers' Training School.
