Henry May (February 13, 1816 – September 25, 1866) was a U.S. Representative from Maryland. Early life May was born in Washington, D.C., on February 13, 1816. He was a son of Dr. Frederick May (1773–1847) and Juliana Mathilda (née Slacum) May (1793–1822). His siblings included John Frederick May, William May, Julia Matilda (née May) Oelrichs (mother of Hermann Oelrichs, Charles May Oelrichs and Lucie Oelrichs Jay), Laura (née May) Wise (the wife of Gen. George D. Wise), and Julian S. May. His father, who was born in Boston, was a physician who spent nearly the last fifty years of his life practicing in Washington. His paternal grandparents were Abigail (née May) May and Col. John May, who participated in the Boston Tea Party and became a prominent soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Henry May (New Zealand Politician)
Henry Leonard James May (13 April 1912 – 22 April 1995) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. He was a cabinet minister from 1972 to 1975. Biography Early life and career May was born in Petone in 1912. He attended Petone convent school. He left school at 13 and found employment with Lever Brothers, later studying engineering part-time at Wellington Technical College. He then gained a job at the New Zealand Railways Department in the late 1920s, where soon after his wages were cut by 10% as part of the retrenchment policies of the United–Reform coalition government. He was also member of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. At the outbreak of World War II his position with the railways was classified as a reserved occupation and he was ineligible to serve overseas. Lieutenant Henry May VC (29 July 1885 – 26 July 1941) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life Henry was born 29 July 1885 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, to William and Maggie May. He attended Dalmarnock Public School in Bridgeton and enlisted in the Army on 29 August 1902 at the age of seventeen. He served as a rifleman in the 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), British Army during the First World War. Henry Allan Roughton May
Colonel Henry Allan Roughton May (23 August 1863 – 10 April 1930) was a British Army officer who served as Commanding Officer (1912 and 1920) of the Artists Rifles. Biography May was educated at Bloxham School. He joined the Artists' Rifles in 1882, as a private but rose to the rank of Colonel. In 1914, when the call came, he was the command of the corps, which formed then the 28th Battalion London Regiment, and after being in command of troops at the Tower, he went over to France in October, 1914, just after the disastrous retreat from Mons, when General Sir John French's army was denuded of officers. General French called on the Artists to replace the heavy casualties, and this, under Colonel May, was done, and done so well that for the greater part of the war period May was occupied in training officers for the Army. Henry May (co-operative Activist)
Henry John May (16 July 1867 – 19 November 1939) was a British co-operative movement activist and from 1913 to 1939 he was Secretary of the International Co-operative Alliance. Born in Plumstead, Kent, May left school at thirteen to work at the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society (RACS). He completed an engineering apprenticeship at the Royal Arsenal and joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, but after meeting Thomas Blandford, directed his spare time back to the RACS. He joined its board and became editor of its journal, ''Comradeship'', then in 1898 was elected to the national board of the Co-operative Union. From 1905 until 1913, he was secretary of the Union's southern region, and in 1909 became secretary of the Co-operative Congress' Parliamentary Committee.H. F.
