Henry Marshall (New York Politician)
Henry Marshall (January 25, 1847 – September 24, 1938) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was born on January 25, 1847, in Washington County, New York, the son of Robert Marshall and Margaret (Law) Marshall. He attended the common schools and Cambridge Washington Academy. Then he entered politics, was a civil justice, and wrote editorials for the '' Seneca Falls Courier'', and the '' Saratoga Daily Journal''. He graduated from Albany Law School in 1882, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in New York City, but resided in Brooklyn. Marshall was a member of the New York State Assembly (Kings Co., 17th D.) in 1896, 1897 and 1898. The 125th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 1 to March 27, 1902, during the second year of Benjamin B. Odell, Jr.'s governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1894, 50 Senators and 150 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (twelve districts), Kings County (seven districts), Erie County (three districts) and Monroe County (two districts). The Assembly districts were made up of contiguous area, all within the same county. At this time there were two major political parties: the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. George Law (financier)
George Law (October 25, 1806 – November 18, 1881) was an American financier from New York. Early life His only early education was winter night school. At the age of eighteen, he left his father's farm and after walking to Troy, he learned the trades of masonry and stonemasonry in Hoosic. He was employed with the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1825, then superintended the making of canal-locks at High Falls. Afterward he went to the mountains of Pennsylvania to quarry stone for locks, and was employed as a mechanic on canals. In June 1829, he was awarded a contract for a small lock and aqueduct on the Delaware and Hudson Canal. Self-taught, he studied and made himself a good engineer and draughtsman and became a large contractor for the construction of railroads and canals.
