Henry Marcus Clark
Henry Marcus Clark (15 September 1859 - 14 March 1913) was an Australian businessman who built a retailing empire known as Marcus Clark & Co., which consisted of a chain of Marcus Clark department stores. Migration to Australia and entering business Clark was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, in 1859. He was the son of Cuthbert Anthony Clark, a silk merchant, and his wife, Charlotte Mary Clark (née Southee). He arrived in Australia from England in 1880, and lived briefly in Melbourne but soon traveled to Sydney by way of the goldfields at Parkes and Hill End. In 1882 he arrived in Sydney and was employed in John Kingsbury's drapery store in Newtown. In 1883 he married his first wife, and acquired Kingsbury's business. The business became Marcus Clark & Co. and rapidly expanded throughout New South Wales. Marcus Clark & Co
Marcus Clark & Co was an Australian department store chain, founded by Henry Marcus Clark in 1883. History The store started in the Sydney suburb of Newtown on 1 February 1883 as a two-window draper shop, and soon opened new stores in Marrickville and Bondi Junction. In 1896 a store closer to the city was opened on Broadway on the corner of Harris Street near Railway Square. It had a different concept and was stocked with less expensive wares and was called Bon Marche after the Paris department store. The store succeeded and in 1909 a larger building was constructed on the site to a design by Arthur Anderson. The building is now part of the University of Technology Sydney. Marcus Clark & Co made arguably its biggest and most lasting mark on Sydney in 1906 when the James Nangle-designed Central Square building, known as the flat-iron building, was erected on the corner of George and Pitt Streets, Railway Square, on the site of an early toll-gate. Mount Wilga House
Mount Wilga House is a heritage-listed former residence and rehabilitation hospital at 2a Manor Road (Rosamond Street), Hornsby in the Hornsby Shire local government area of New South Wales, Australia. Its design is attributed to Henry Marcus Clark and was built from 1913 to 1914. It is also known as Mt Wilga. The property is privately owned. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The North Shore railway line terminates at Hornsby, where it connects with the Main North line going to Brooklyn, Gosford, Newcastle and eventually the North Coast and Brisbane. Draper
Draper was originally a term for a retailer or wholesaler of cloth that was mainly for clothing. A draper may additionally operate as a cloth merchant or a haberdasher. History Drapers were an important trade guild during the medieval period, when the sellers of cloth operated out of drapers' shops. Waverley Cemetery
The Waverley Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on top of the cliffs at Bronte in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Opened in 1877 and built by R. Watkins (cemetery lodge, 1878) and P. Beddie (cemetery office, 1915), the cemetery is noted for its largely intact Victorian and Edwardian monuments. It is regularly cited as being one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. The cemetery contains the graves of many significant Australians including the poet Henry Lawson. Also known as General Cemetery Waverley, it was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 28 October 2016. Mount York, a mountain in the western region of the Explorer Range, part of the Blue Mountains Range that is a spur off the Great Dividing Range, is located approximately west of Sydney, just outside Mount Victoria in New South Wales, Australia. Mount York has an elevation of and is a projection of the Blue Mountains dissected plateau, creating a promontory of the western escarpment with a minor rise at its summit. Description Mount York is mainly forested in Eucalypt growth, mostly open canopied. Several small creeks that flow into the Coxs River system run down its side.
