Henry Kaiser (musician)
Henry Kaiser (born September 19, 1952) is an American guitarist and composer, known as an idiosyncratic soloist, a sideman, an ethnomusicologist, and a film score composer. Recording and performing prolifically in many styles of music, Kaiser is a fixture on the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. He is considered a member of the "second generation" of American free improvisers. He is married to Canadian artist Brandy Gale. He is the son of Henry J. Kaiser Jr. and the grandson of industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. Biography In 1977, Kaiser founded Metalanguage Records with Larry Ochs (Rova Saxophone Quartet) and Greg Goodman. ''Friends & Enemies'' is a 1999 double-CD compilation album of studio and live material by Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser. It contains the complete collaborative recordings of Frith and Kaiser from 1979 to 1999, namely their two studio albums ''With Friends Like These'' (1979) and '' Who Needs Enemies?'' (1983), an unreleased live album recorded in 1984, and new studio tracks recorded in 1999. The album was released by Cuneiform Records in June 1999. Background Oliver DiCicco was the engineer for Frith and Kaiser's two collaborative albums, ''With Friends Like These'' and '' Who Needs Enemies?'' at Mobius Music in San Francisco, and for the 1999 studio sessions, also at Mobius Music. It was the group's second album and was recorded at Mobius Music in San Francisco on March 19–23, 1990. The album was released in 1990 in the United States by Windham Hill Records on CD. The album was reissued in 2008 by Fledg'ling Records with one extra track recorded live. Reception In a review of the album in ''The Santa Fe New Mexican'', Steve Terrell called French Frith Kaiser Thompson "the world's most obscure 'supergroup. It was the group's first album and was recorded at Mobius Music in San Francisco in March 1987. The album was released in 1987 in the United States by Rhino Records on LP, CD and cassette. The CD release contained two extra tracks. The album was reissued in 2008 by Fledg'ling Records with five extra tracks recorded live at the Ashkenaz in Berkeley, California. ''Live, Love, Larf & Loaf'' was released in Borneo and Sumatra with the title ''Dead Man's Gloom''. Reception Music critic Robert Christgau called the album "an ad hoc collaboration that sounds as good as it reads". Mark Deming at AllMusic described it as " noddball delight from four truly gifted musicians", adding that while Kaiser, Frith and French's "avant-leaning art rock" is toned down by the presence of Thompson's folk-rock guitar, it does not detract from the album's appeal. Richard Thompson (musician)
Richard Thompson (born 3 April 1949) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Thompson first gained prominence in the late 1960s as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the folk rock group Fairport Convention, which he had co-founded in 1967. After departing the group in 1971, Thompson released his debut solo album ''Henry the Human Fly'' in 1972. The next year, he formed a duo with his then-wife Linda Thompson, which produced six albums, including the critically acclaimed ''I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight'' (1974) and ''Shoot Out the Lights'' (1982). After the dissolution of the duo, Thompson revived his solo career with the release of ''Hand of Kindness'' in 1983. He has released a total of eighteen solo studio albums. John French (musician)
John Stephen French (born 29 September 1948) is an American drummer and former member of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, where he was known by the nickname Drumbo. He was the principal drummer on several of Beefheart's albums, including 1969's ''Trout Mask Replica'', for which he also acted as arranger. He later released several albums as a solo artist as well as with the collaborative group French Frith Kaiser Thompson.
