Henry Grey, 1st Duke Of Kent
Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, KG, PC (16715 June 1740) was a British politician and courtier. None of his sons outlived him, so his new title became extinct on his death. Though the house he built at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire has gone, parts of his very grand garden have survived relatively untouched. Family He was a son of Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent, and Mary Grey, 1st Baroness Lucas of Crudwell. He succeeded his father as 12th Earl of Kent in 1702, having succeeded his mother as 2nd Baron Lucas earlier the same year. Sir Henry de Grey of Grays Thurrock, Essex (1155–1219) was a favourite courtier of King John of England. Family Sir Henry was the son of John de Grey (born Thurrock, Essex, c. 1140 and married c. 1157) and probably a great-grandson of Anchetil de Greye (b. circa 1100) of Rotherfield Greys, a grandson of Domesday baron Anchetil de Greye (c. 1052 – 1086+). Lieutenant-General Sir Henry George Grey GCB GCH (25 October 1766 – 11 January 1845) was a British Army officer who served as acting Governor of Cape Colony. Military career Born the son of General Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey, Henry joined the British Army as an ensign in the 26th Regiment of Foot on 29 November 1779. He soon afterwards transferred to become a cornet in the 19th Dragoons. Grey served throughout this period as an aide de camp to his father at Plymouth, being promoted to lieutenant on 28 July 1781 in the 30th Regiment of Foot and then transferring to the 17th Dragoons on 7 March the following year. He left his position with his father at the end of the American Revolutionary War in 1783. As a lieutenant the majority of Grey's service was in Ireland, where for a while he was aide de camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord Rutland. Henry George Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (28 December 18029 October 1894), known as Viscount Howick from 1807 until 1845, was an English statesman. Background Grey was the eldest son of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, who served as Prime Minister in the 1830s, by his wife The Honorable Mary Ponsonby, daughter of William Ponsonby, 1st Baron Ponsonby. Political career He entered parliament in 1826, under the title of Viscount Howick, as Whig member for Winchelsea, and then briefly for Higham Ferrers before settling for a northern constituency. Henry Grey (1778–1859) was a Scottish minister in the Church of Scotland and following the Disruption of 1843 in the Free Church. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland in 1844. Early life Grey was born on 11 February 1778, at Alnwick, Northumberland. His father was a physician in Morpeth. His education was chiefly left to his mother, who had an early breach with his father, and moved with her son to Edinburgh. There he passed through the usual course of study preparatory to entering into the office of the ministry in the Church of Scotland. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Edinburgh in November 1800. He was ordained in 1801. Ministry Grey's sympathies were wholly with the evangelical portion of the church. In September 1801 he was ordained as minister of the parish of Stenton in East Lothian. This was a quiet place, where he spent 12 years, including getting married and starting a family. Henry Grey (MP)
Henry Grey (17 August 1683 – 9 September 1740) was a British Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1709 and 1740. Grey was born as Henry Neville, the younger son of Richard Neville of Billingbear House in Berkshire and his wife Katherine Grey, daughter of Ralph Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Werke. He travelled abroad in Holland, Germany, Italy and France between 1699 and 1700. In 1707, he changed his surname to Grey by Act of Parliament to inherit the estates of his uncle Ralph Grey, 4th Baron Grey of Werke, in Northumberland. Grey entered Parliament for Wendover at a by-election on 21 November 1709, through the influence of his friend Richard Hampden. He successfully contested this seat at the 1710 British general election, but was defeated when he stood at Orford in the same election. Henry Grey, 1st Earl of Stamford ( 1599 – 21 August 1673), known as the Lord Grey of Groby from 1614 to 1628, was an English nobleman and military leader. He was the eldest son of Sir John Grey and Elizabeth Nevill. His mother was probably a daughter of Edward Nevill, 8th Baron Bergavenny (died 1622) and his wife Rachel Lennard. Henry succeeded his paternal grandfather, Henry Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Groby, as second Baron Grey of Groby in July 1614.
