Sir Henry Goring, 2nd Baronet
Sir Henry Goring, 2nd Baronet (1 May 1622 – 3 April 1702) was an English barrister and politician. Goring was the son of Henry Goring and Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Eversfield, High Sheriff of Sussex The office of Sheriff of Sussex was established before the Norman Conquest. The Office of sheriff remained first in precedence in the counties until the reign of Edward VII when an Order in Council in 1908 gave the Lord-Lieutenant the prime office .... He succeeded as second Baronet of Highden on 25 February 1658, according to a special remainder in the letters patent. Goring sat as Member of Parliament for Sussex (UK Parliament constituency), Sussex from 1660 to 1661 and for Steyning (UK Parliament constituency), Steyning in 1660 and again from 1661 to 1679. Goring married Frances, daughter of Sir Edward Bishopp, 2nd Baronet, in 1642. She died in December 1694. Henry Goring (1646–1685)
Henry Goring (6 April 1646 – 10 June 1685) was an English soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1673 and 1685. Goring was the son of Sir Henry Goring, 2nd Baronet of the first creation and his wife Diana Bishopp daughter of Sir Edward Bishopp. He was a captain in the Regiment of Foot. In 1671 he purchased an estate at Wappingthorn, Steyning, Sussex. Goring was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for New Shoreham in 1673 and held the seat to 1678. In 1679 he was elected MP for Bramber and held the seat until 1685. In 1685 he was elected MP for Steyning. He was High Sheriff of Sussex from 1681 to 1682. Goring was killed at a theatre by Sir Edward Dering, 3rd Baronet, or Dering's son Charles, at the age of 39. Goring had married, firstly, Elizabeth Morewood, daughter of Anthony Morewood, in October 1667 and secondly, Mary Covert, daughter of Sir John Covert, 1st Baronet, in 1676. Sir Henry Goring, 4th Baronet
Sir Henry Goring, 4th Baronet (baptized 16 September 1679 – 12 November 1731), of Highden, Washington, Sussex, one of the Goring baronets of Highden, was an English politician who had a part in the Jacobite Atterbury Plot of 1721. Family and background Goring was born in 1679, fourth son of Captain Henry Goring (died 1685) of Wappingthorne, (in Steyning) Sussex, and his second wife Mary, daughter of Sir John Covert, 1st Baronet, of Slaugham, Sussex. He married in 1714 Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Matthew, of Twickenham, Middlesex, and by her had nine sons and two daughters. He succeeded his half-brother Charles to the baronetcy and to Wappingthorn estate in Steyning, Sussex in 1714. Goring Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Goring, both in the Baronetage of England. The second creation came into the family through a special remainder in the patent creating the baronetcy. Only the latter creation is extant as of 2008. The Goring Baronetcy, of Burton in the County of (West) Sussex, was created in the Baronetage of England on 14 May 1622 for William Goring, subsequently Member of Parliament for Sussex. The title became extinct on the death of the third Baronet in 1724. The Bowyer, later Goring Baronetcy, of Highden in the County of Sussex, was created in the Baronetage of England on 18 May 1678 for Sir James Bowyer, 3rd Baronet, of Leighthorne (see Bowyer baronets), with remainder to Henry Goring and with the precedence of 23 July 1627, the date when the Bowyer Baronetcy of Leighthorne was created.
