Henry Fry (merchant)
Henry Fry (1826–1896) was a ship-broker, ship owner and commission merchant based in Quebec City. He was Lloyd's of London agent for the St Lawrence River (Sorel to Gaspe); served as a director of the Quebec Bank (1864–1878), and member then president (1868–1871) of the Board of Trade, VP then President of the Dominion Board of Trade (1872 and 1873). He was respected for his knowledge of clipper ships and commerce, an advocate for limits on excessive deck-lading, which could cause ships to capsize, and against the practice of crimping. He wrote extensively about 19th century North Atlantic shipping, safety issues, navigation and trade. Quebec High School
Quebec High School (QHS) is a high school belonging to the Central Quebec School Board. The School is located in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, and is one of three English-language high schools that serve the Quebec city region (the others being Saint-Patrick's High School and Dollard-des-Ormeaux located on CFB Valcartier). The school is composed of three main floors. The school was established in 1804, with an addition of a Girls Only wing in 1875, but in 1941 the school became a mixed school integrating both sexes. In 2006, QHS began a three-year process to implement an initiative called the Community Learning Centre Project. This initiative was made possible through the Canada Entente agreement with the federal government and the Quebec Ministry of Education. Mount Royal Cemetery
Opened in 1852, Mount Royal Cemetery is a terraced cemetery on the north slope of Mount Royal in the borough of Outremont in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, a Reform Judaism burial ground, is within the Mount Royal grounds. The burial ground shares the mountain with the much larger adjacent Roman Catholic cemetery, Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery, and the Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, an Ashkenazi Jewish cemetery. Mount Royal Cemetery is bordered on the southeast by Mount Royal Park, on the west by Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, and on the north by Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery. Sweetsburg, Quebec
Cowansville is a town in south-central Quebec, Canada, located on Lac Davignon north of the U.S. border. It is the seat of Brome-Missisquoi, a regional county municipality. The population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 15,234. In recent years, Cowansville has seen its commercial activity blossom mainly due to its proximity to a major freeway, Autoroute 10, and the Eastern Townships ski resort region. History and name Jacob Ruiter was the first person to settle on the current site of Cowansville. In 1800 he built a flour mill, and then a saw mill. In 1805, Ruiter named the small town as Nelsonville, in honour of British admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson, who was killed in the naval Battle of Trafalgar. The city's current name is due to Peter Cowan, a merchant from Montreal who settled in the area in 1836 and become postmaster in 1841. The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) is a nonprofit organization with a focus on empowerment, leadership, and rights of women, young women, and girls in more than 100 countries. Literary And Historical Society Of Quebec
The Literary and Historical Society of Quebec (LHSQ) was the first historical society, and one of the first learned societies, in Canada. It was founded in 1824 by George Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie, governor of British North America. Its headquarters are still located in Quebec City. After several moves and two fires, the Society settled into the northern wing of Quebec City's Morrin College in 1868. The College closed at the turn of the 20th century but the Society stayed on, eventually taking over the entire building in 2004. The Society's original aims were encyclopaedic, being founded in the infancy of Canada's cultural and intellectual development. The Society gathered historical documents about Canada and republished many rare manuscripts. Research in all fields of knowledge was actively encouraged. Quebec Bank
Quebec Bank was founded on June 9, 1818 to meet a perceived need by some merchants and residents of Quebec City. They wanted an alternative to the newly founded Bank of Montreal which they felt was inadequate for the needs of the province. The bank was incorporated in 1822 in Quebec City and made good progress until the great revulsion of 1826–7. The first president was John William Woolsey. Robert Henry Bethune was part of the banks organization from 1864 -1870 during a time when Quebec Bank was changing the way Canadian banks lent money. The bank was predominantly in Quebec and to a lesser extent in Ontario with a few branches in western Canada when it was absorbed by the Royal Bank of Canada in 1917. The integration of the Quebec Bank into the Royal Bank was made effective January 1, 1918, adding 20 million dollars to the assets of the Royal Bank.
