Henry Cunningham
Henry Cunningham (c. 1678–1736), of Boquhan, Gorgunnock, Stirling, was a Scottish Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1709 to 1734. He was given the post of Governor of Jamaica, but died two months after landing there. A description of Cunningham appears in the introduction to Scott’s historical novel ‘’Rob Roy’’. Early life Cunningham was the only son of William Cunningham of Boquhan and his first wife Margaret Erskine, daughter of David Erskine, 2nd Lord Cardross. He was Commissioner justiciary for Highlands in 1701 and 1702. By 1708, he married Jean Lennox daughter of John Lennox of Woodhead, Campsie, Stirling. Career Cunningham stood as a Whig for Stirlingshire at the 1708 British general election but there was a dispute among the parties and the sheriff, on the pretext that Cunningham had only lately acquired a freehold, made a double return. Boquhan
Boquhan (pronounced Bowhan) is a hamlet in Stirling, Scotland, sometimes known as Wester Boquhan to distinguish it from the other nearby Boquhan, near Kippen. The hamlet lies southwest of the village of Balfron and northeast of Killearn. Just east of Boquhan is Boquhan Old House which dates from 1784. Rob Roy MacGregor
Robert Roy MacGregor ( gd, Raibeart Ruadh MacGriogair; 7 March 1671 – 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero. Early life Rob Roy was born in the Kingdom of Scotland at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were the local Clan MacGregor Tacksman, Donald Glas MacGregor, and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother. In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary MacGregor of Comar (1671–1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. Sir James Campbell, 2nd Baronet of Ardkinglass, (c.1666 – 5 July 1752) was a British Army officer and Scottish politician who sat in the Parliament of Scotland from 1703 to 1707 and in the British House of Commons from 1707 to 1741. Early life Campbell was the son of Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Baronet, of Ardkinglass and his wife Helen Maxwell, daughter of Patrick Maxwell, of Newark, Renfrew who was MP in the Parliament of Scotland. The family seat was Ardkinglas Castle, which stood on the shore of Loch Fyne, Argyllshire, Scotland. The castle was built in the form of a quadrangle around an inner courtyard measuring 98 ft in each direction. There were large turrets on three of the corners and to the front was a large gate tower with two flanking defensive turrets. It was surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland and the vast Ardkinglas estate.
