Lieutenant Henry Coyle Rath DFC was a Canadian World War I flying ace credited with twelve aerial victories. Early life Henry Coyle Rath was born on 12 November 1898 to Maggie and Thomas Rath. Henry Rath was born in Hastings, Ontario, Canada. He was working as a hardware clerk in Tweed, Ontario prior to his enlistment in the military. Flying service Rath joined the Royal Flying Corps in September 1917. He was assigned to 29 Squadron on 5 June 1918 as a Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a pilot. He scored his first victory on 28 July, helping fellow ace Robert Holme drive down a German two-seater reconnaissance plane out of control. Three days later, they again cooperated, destroying a similar plane; Rath also drove down a third recon plane in the same dogfight. Hastings, Ontario
Hastings is a community within the municipality of Trent Hills, Northumberland County, in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail in what is considered to be Ontario's "cottage country". Robert Holme
Flight Lieutenant Robert Charles Lyon Holme (10 November 1896 – 4 October 1922) was a British World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. Biography Holme was the only son of Robert Francis Lyon Holme, and the grandson of Charles Trask, of Norton-sub-Hamdon, Somerset. After passing out from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, as a "Gentlemen Cadet", he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) regiment on 11 November 1914. Holme was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps, and was awarded Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate No. 1665 on 28 August 1915 after qualifying in a Maurice Farman biplane at the British Flying School in Le Crotoy, France. Norman Leslie Robert Franks (born 1940) is an English militaria writer who specialises in aviation topics. He focuses on the pilots and squadrons of World Wars I and II. Biography He published his first book in 1976. He was an Organisation and Methods Officer with the Nationwide Building Society in London before he retired. He now lives in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, with his wife Heather. They have two sons, Rob and Mike, and five grandchildren. He was a consultant for the Channel 4 television series ''Dogfight: The Mystery of the Red Baron''. His 1995 book on the Red Baron has been published and reissued by three publishers. Fokker was a Dutch aircraft manufacturer named after its founder, Anthony Fokker. The company operated under several different names. Arthur Reed (aviator)
Lieutenant Arthur Eden Reed (22 August 1898 – 29 June 1937) was a South African World War I flying ace accredited with 19 aerial victories. Early years Childhood and education Reed was born on 22 August 1898 in Pretoria, South Africa, the son of Charles James Bowler Reed, and his wife Maria Pauline Voigt. Brother to Charles Bolingbroke Reed, the eldest of five children, and his three sisters Ethel, Edna, and Phyllis. Reed attended Pretoria Boys High School, along with his brother Charles, where he matriculated in December 1914. Lieut. A.E. Reed was awarded the D.F.C. and Bar while serving in the R.F.C. Lieutenant Claude Melnot Wilson DFC (16 September 1898 – 14 October 1918) was a Canadian World War I flying ace credited with eight aerial victories. Early life Claude Melnot Wilson was the son of Margaret and Charles Hurst Wilson of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. History The Municipality of Tweed is an amalgamated municipality comprising the former Village of Tweed and the former Hungerford Township and former Elzevir & Grimsthorpe Townships. Flying Ace
A flying ace, fighter ace or air ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The exact number of aerial victories required to officially qualify as an ace is varied, but is usually considered to be five or more. The concept of the "ace" emerged in 1915 during World War I, at the same time as aerial dogfighting. It was a propaganda term intended to provide the home front with a cult of the hero in what was otherwise a war of attrition. The individual actions of aces were widely reported and the image was disseminated of the ace as a chivalrous knight reminiscent of a bygone era. For a brief early period when air-to-air combat was just being invented, the exceptionally skilled pilot could shape the battle in the skies.
