Henry C. Smith (judge)
Henry Cooper Smith (August 3, 1862 – May 15, 1932) was a justice of the Montana Supreme Court from 1907 to 1913. Born in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Smith read law with the firms of Sale & Pierce and Norcross & Dinwiddie before gaining admission to the Wisconsin Bar in 1885. He moved to Helena, Montana Helena (; ) is the capital city of Montana, United States, and the county seat of Lewis and Clark County. Smith was elected as a district judge to the First Judicial District in 1896, and in 1906, he was elected an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court, serving from 1907 until his term expired in 1913, when he went back to practicing law. The Montana Supreme Court is the supreme court, highest court of the state court system in the U.S. state of Montana. It is established and its powers defined by Article VII of the 1972 Montana Constitution. Fond du Lac County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 104,154. Its county seat is Fond du Lac. The county was created in the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 and later organized in 1844. Fond du Lac is French for "bottom of the lake", so given because of the county's location at the southern shore of Lake Winnebago. Reading Law
Reading law was the method used in common law countries, particularly the United States, for people to prepare for and enter the legal profession before the advent of law schools. It consisted of an extended internship or apprenticeship under the tutelage or mentoring of an experienced lawyer. The practice largely died out in the early 20th century.
