Henry Byerley Thomson
Henry Byerley Thomson (1822–1867) was an English barrister and jurist, and the 12th Queen's Advocate of Ceylon. Initially Henry William Thomson, in 1846 he added his mother's maiden name, and was known as Henry Byerley Thomson or Henry William Byerley Thomson. Life He was the son of Anthony Todd Thomson by his second wife Katharine Byerley, whose surname he assumed in later life, and was born in May 1822; the orientalist John Cockburn Thomson (1834–1860) was his younger brother. He was educated at University College, London, and at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a B.A. in 1846. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in May 1849, and practised on the northern circuit. He specialised in military and international law. Henry Collingwood Selby was the 11th Queen's Advocate of Ceylon. He was appointed on 23 June 1848, succeeding Arthur William Buller, and held the office until 1858. ''The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation'' is a style guide that prescribes the most widely used legal citation system in the United States. It is taught and used at a majority of U.S. law schools and is also used in a majority of federal courts. Legal publishers also use several "house" citation styles in their works. Puisne (; from Old French ''puisné'', modern ''puîné'', "later born, younger" (and thence, "inferior") from late Latin ''post-'', "after", and ''natus'', "born") is a legal term of art obsolete in many jurisdictions and, when current, used mainly in British English meaning "inferior in rank". In the 18th and 19th-century legal world, the word was more often pronounced to distance it from its anglicized form ''puny'', an adjective meaning "weak or undersized". Apoplexy () is rupture of an internal organ and the accompanying symptoms. The term formerly referred to what is now called a stroke. Nowadays, health care professionals do not use the term, but instead specify the anatomic location of the bleeding, such as cerebral, ovarian or pituitary. Sir Richard Francis Morgan (21 February 1821 – 27 January 1876) was a Ceylonese ( Sri Lankan) lawyer, who served as the 13th Queen's Advocate of Ceylon and acting Chief Justice of Ceylon. He was the first Asian in the British Empire to receive a Knighthood and first Ceylonese to be a member of the Governor's Executive Council and was an unofficial (Burgher) member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon.
