Henry Burgess (cricketer)
Henry Burgess (5 May 1879 – 16 April 1964) was an English cricketer. Burgess was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Carlton Curlieu, Leicestershire. Burgess made his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Essex at the County Ground, Leyton in the 1900 County Championship. He made seven further first-class appearances for the county, the last of which came against Surrey at Aylestone Road, Leicester in the 1902 County Championship. In his eight first-class matches for Leicestershire, he took 11 wickets at an average of 47.63, with best figures of 3/106. A tailend batsman, he scored a total of 53 runs at a batting average of 5.30, with a high score of 20. He later made a single first-class appearance for Northamptonshire in the 1905 County Championship against Sussex at the County Ground, Northampton. Carlton Curlieu
Carlton Curlieu is a small village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, about eleven miles south-east of Leicester city centre, and not far from Kibworth. The village's name means 'farm/settlement of the free peasants'. In 1253, the village was held by William de Curley. Population The Domesday Survey listed 24 inhabitants and by 1563 there were 25 households. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 30. The population remained less than 100 at the 2011 census. Details are included in the civil parish of Illston on the Hill. The Church of St Mary the Virgin The church was founded in the 11th century. Of the 12th century church building only the lower stages of the tower remain. County Ground, Northampton
The County Ground is a cricket venue on Wantage Road in the Abington area of Northampton, England. It is home to Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, and was used by Northampton Town F.C. from 1897 to 1994. Cricket Northamptonshire played their first match at the ground in 1886 before competing in the Minor Counties Championship competition between 1895 and 1904, winning the title three times. They were accepted into the County Championship and played their first first-class match at the ground on 5 June 1905. Northamptonshire drew with Leicestershire in a rain-hit match that only permitted 75 overs of play. Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex. 1905 County Championship
The 1905 County Championship was the 16th officially organised running of the County Championship, and ran from 4 May to 4 September 1905. Yorkshire won their seventh championship title, while the previous season's winners, Lancashire, finished in fourth place. The number of participants was expanded from fifteen to sixteen, with Northamptonshire gaining first-class status, having previously played with some success in the Minor Counties Championship. Batting Average (cricket)
In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out, usually given to two decimal places. Since the number of runs a player scores and how often they get out are primarily measures of their own playing ability, and largely independent of their teammates, batting average is a good metric for an individual player's skill as a batter (although the practice of drawing comparisons between players on this basis is not without criticism). The number is also simple to interpret intuitively. If all the batter's innings were completed (i.e. they were out every innings), this is the average number of runs they score per innings.
