Henry Billings Brown
Henry Billings Brown (March 2, 1836 – September 4, 1913) was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1891 to 1906. Although a respected lawyer and U.S. District Judge before ascending to the high court, Brown is harshly criticized for writing the majority opinion in ''Plessy v. Ferguson'', widely regarded as one of the most ill-considered decisions ever issued by the Court, which upheld the legality of racial segregation in public transportation. ''Plessy'' legitimized existing state laws establishing racial segregation, and provided an impetus for later segregation statutes. Legislative achievements won during the Reconstruction Era were erased through ''Plessy's'' "separate but equal" doctrine. Reverend Henry Brown
Henry Brown (April 17, 1823 – September 3, 1906) was an African Methodist Episcopal Church minister, abolitionist, and a leader of the Underground Railroad. Early life and education Brown was born into slavery on a plantation in Raleigh, North Carolina on April 17, 1823. In 1835 at the age of 12, Brown was separated from his family and moved to Ohio. In 1837, he was purchased as an indentured servant for a Quaker family in Indiana, where he was a farm laborer. He received his freedom through manumission at around the age of 20. Brown was self-taught through reading literature and the Bible. Career In 1846, Brown was ordained as a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Brown was a frequent preacher at congregations in the Midwest. After moving to Springfield, Illinois in around 1848, Brown became an active leader and "conductor" in the Underground Railroad in Quincy and Springfield, assisting individuals escaping slavery and in pursuit of freedom. Henry Brown is a film, television and stage actor whose career began in the early 1970s and continues to the present. With over sixty credits, he has appeared in over thirty films and thirty television shows. He quite often plays policemen and law enforcement officials. He played the main role in Carmen Madden's 2010 film, '' Everyday Black Man''. Background In 1969, Brown came to UCSB with the intention of playing baseball. He graduated from there in 1971. One day while grabbing a quick meal, he accidentally spilt a glass of milk on Frank Silvera who happened to be a guest artist at UCSB at the time. Silvera introduced him to Dr. William R. Reardon. Brown was then recruited for the UCSB Touring Players. It was actually another guest artist Paul Winfield that introduced Brown to Stanley Kramer, and while still a student, Brown would land his first acting role in a Kramer film. Henry Collins Brown
Henry Collins Brown (1862–1961) was a Scottish-born New York historian, lecturer, and author, and the founder of the Museum of the City of New York. He arrived in New York at the age of 13. After working as an advertising salesman, traveling throughout New York City, he became a journalist for '' The Sun'', writing about the city's history as well as its buildings. Brown also wrote several books about New York's history, and was the editor of ''Valentine's Manual''. Brown was first married to Kate Ross (died March 1918). They had four sons and two daughters, including Kay B. Barrett. He married second Clara Brown Lyman on February 5, 1919; they resided at the New York Biltmore Hotel. Rodley (car)
The Rodley was a British microcar designed by Henry Brown and built by the Rodley Automobile Company in Rodley, West Yorkshire between 1954 and 1956. Henry Brown also designed the Scootacar microcar (built between 1957 and 1964). The body was of steel construction, rather than the more usual glass fibre, and was mounted on a steel chassis. The engine was a rear-mounted, direct driven impeller air-cooled 750 cc twin-cylinder unit made by JAP driving the rear wheels through a three-speed gearbox and chain to the axle which had a friction differential. The suspension was by independent coil springs at the front and underslung semi elliptic at the rear. Steering was by a chain system. Although the car was advertised as a four-seater and fitted with four seats, the rear ones, as might be expected in a microcar, were rather small and cramped. Henry William Brown
Henry William Brown (January 25, 1923 – February 19, 2008) was a United States Army Air Force fighter ace who was credited with shooting down fourteen aircraft and destroying another fourteen on the ground during World War II. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1974. He was the highest scoring ace of the 355th Fighter Group. Early life Brown was born on January 25, 1923 in Dallas, Texas. World War II Brown joined the reserves in December 1941 and attended flight school at Spence Field in Georgia, graduating as a flight officer in March 1943. He was assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron of the 355th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force at RAF Steeple Morden in November 1943. Brown scored his first four ground kills, while flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, before transitioning to the P-51 Mustang.
