Henry Beagley (born 7 January 1805) was an English professional cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1825 to 1833. He was a brother of Thomas Beagley and an occasional wicket-keeper who was mainly associated with Hampshire. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Thomas Beagley
Thomas Beagley (5 October 1789 – 21 February 1858) was an English professional cricketer. He had two brothers Henry and John who also played first-class cricket. He was arguably the most talented of the trio, playing for Hampshire, Surrey, Suffolk, England and the MCC during his 23-year playing career. Beagley was regarded as one of the greatest hitters of a ball in England in the 1820s up to the early 1830s. Early life Born into a working-class family to Stephen and Mary Beagley (née Gould), Beagley was baptised four days after his birth, on 9 November 1789. His family had lived in Farringdon since as far back as 1692, and in the Alton area as far back as 1605. He had some roots in other Hampshire settlements, such as Hartley Mauditt and Bentworth, and was connected to families such as Fry, Carter, Page, Russell and Grant. Hampshire County Cricket Teams
Hampshire county cricket teams have been traced back to the 18th century but the county's involvement in cricket goes back much further than that. Given that the first definite mention of cricket anywhere in the world is dated c.1550 in Guildford, in neighbouring Surrey, it is almost certain that the game had reached Hampshire by the 16th century. 17th century As elsewhere in south east England, cricket became established in Hampshire during the 17th century and the earliest village matches took place before the English Civil War. It is believed that the earliest county teams were formed in the aftermath of the Restoration in 1660. A Latin poem by Robert Matthew in 1647 contains a probable reference to cricket being played by pupils of Winchester College on nearby St Catherine's Hill. The Bs
The Bs was an occasional team that played first-class cricket in the first half of the 19th century in matches against All-England and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The team ostensibly consisted of players whose surname began with the letter B given that there were numerous top-class players at that time who qualified: e.g., William Beldham, Lord Frederick Beauclerk and Jem Broadbridge. However, there were instances of the team including given men. The Bs is first recorded in the 1805 season and the team was raised sporadically until the 1832 season. The Bs achieved unwanted fame in June 1810 when they played All-England at Lord's Old Ground and were dismissed for only 6 in their second innings, enabling All-England to win the match by 6 wickets. This is the world record for the lowest innings total in first-class cricket.
