Henry Alexander (Irish Politician)
Henry Alexander (1763 – 6 May 1818) was an Irish politician from County Londonderry. Family and early life He was the oldest son of Sir Hugh Hill, 1st Baronet of Brook Hall, County Londonderry, who had been a member of the Parliament of Ireland for Londonderry City from 1768 to 1795. His mother Hannah was a daughter of John McClintock, Hill was educated in Londonderry and at Trinity College, Dublin. He then studied at Lincoln's Inn and was called to the bar in Ireland in 1786. In 1788, he married Jane Beresford, daughter of Hon. John Beresford (son of the Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone), who was President of the Irish Board of Revenue). Londonderry City was a parliamentary constituency in Northern Ireland. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the United Kingdom House of Commons, elected by the first past the post voting system. In the first Parliament to be held after the Union of Great Britain and Ireland on 1 January 1801, the first House of Commons of the United Kingdom was composed of all 558 members of the former Parliament of Great Britain and 100 of the members of the House of Commons of Ireland. The Parliament of Great Britain had held its last general election in 1796 and last met on 5 November 1800. The final general election for the Parliament of Ireland had taken place in 1797, although by-elections had continued to take place until 1800. William Edward Hartpole Lecky (26 March 1838 – 22 October 1903) was an Irish historian, essayist, and political theorist with Whig proclivities. His major work was an eight-volume ''History of Ireland during the Eighteenth Century''. Early life Born at Newtown Park, near Dublin, he was the eldest son of John Hartpole Lecky, a landowner. He was educated at Kingstown, Armagh, at Cheltenham College, and at Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated BA in 1859 and MA in 1863, and where he studied divinity with a view to becoming a priest in the Church of Ireland. Career In 1860, Lecky published anonymously a small book entitled ''The Religious Tendencies of the Age'', but on leaving college he turned to historiography. Sir Joseph Hoare, 1st Baronet (25 December 1707 – 24 December 1801) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Hoare was the son of Edward Hoare, the Member of Parliament for Cork, and Grace Burton. His family had settled in Ireland during the early part of the seventeenth century and became prosperous merchants and bankers, who founded Hoare's Bank. Hoare was educated in law and practised as a barrister in Ireland. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons as the MP for Askeaton in 1761. He held the office for an unusually long period of time, sitting until 1800, when the seat was disenfranchised following the Acts of Union 1800 when the Parliament of Ireland was dissolved. He was created a baronet, of Annabella in the Baronetage of Ireland on 10 December 1784. He passionately opposed the union between the Kingdom of Ireland and the Kingdom of Great Britain and spoke at length against it in the House of Commons, despite being ninety years old at the time.
