Henderson High School (Mississippi)
Henderson High School was a public secondary school in Starkville, Mississippi. United States. It served as the high school for black students until the public schools were integrated in 1970. Grades k–8 were also located on the same property. After integration, the buildings served as a junior high school and later as an elementary school. History Until 1910, a school existed for black children on Gillespie Street. In 1910 it was deemed completely unsuitable and a new school known as Public School Number 2 was built with money appropriated by the city, plus the $2 per student provided by the state and the $200 generated by the negro poll tax. Prior to 1926, African American children in Starkville were able to get an education of sorts at what was known as Public School Number 2. Starkville is a city in, and the county seat of, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United States. Mississippi State University is a land-grant institution and is located partially in Starkville but primarily in an adjacent unincorporated area designated by the United States Census Bureau as Mississippi State, Mississippi. John Arthur Peoples Jr. (born August 26, 1926) is an American former educator who was President of Jackson State University from 1967 to 1984. History Peoples was born in August 1926 in Starkville, Mississippi. Unlike many African-Americans in the community, his family owned their home as well as rental property. He learned to read before attending school. He graduated from the segregated black school Oktibbeha County Training School in 1944. In 1945 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served for three years. He studied mathematics at Jackson State, where he received a B.S. in 1950, then went to the University of Chicago, where he received an M.A. in Math in 1951. He taught math From 1951 through 1958 at Froebel School in Gary, Indiana, before taking an assistant principal position at Lincoln School in 1958 and becoming the principal of Banneker School in 1962.
