Hemphill Island is a small, mainly ice-covered Antarctic island lying between Robinson Ridge and Odbert Island, in the Windmill Islands. It was first mapped from air photos taken by USN Operation Highjump and Operation Windmill in 1947 and 1948. It was named by the US-ACAN for George R. Hemphill, meteorologist and member of the Wilkes Station party of 1961. Hemphill is a city in Sabine County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,029 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Sabine County. It is located on State Highway 87 at the junction of State Highway 184, and is surrounded by the Sabine National Forest and the Toledo Bend Reservoir. Geography Hemphill is located at (31.342612, –93.854909). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (1.66%) is water. Hemphill is 484 miles (as the crow flies) from Hemphill County, Texas (which is in the northern Panhandle). This is the largest separation of a Texas city from a Texas county of the same name. Hemphill County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 3,382. The county seat and only incorporated community in the county is the city of Canadian. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1887. It is named for John Hemphill, a judge and Confederate congressman. Hemphill County is one of six prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas. History Early history For the 200 years leading up to 1875, nomadic Indian tribes representing the Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, and others roamed the Panhandle following the huge bison (buffalo) herds. Baron Hemphill, of Rathkenny and of Cashel in the County of Tipperary, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 12 January 1906 for the lawyer and Liberal politician Charles Hemphill, Solicitor-General for Ireland between 1892 and 1895. His elder son, the second Baron, was Crown Prosecutor for County Wicklow. He was succeeded by his younger brother, the third Baron. He was Deputy Chairman of the London County Council from 1907 to 1908. Bastrop is a city in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. It is the parish seat of Morehouse Parish. The population was 11,365 at the 2010 census, a decrease of 1,623 from the 12,988 tabulation of 2000. The population of Bastrop is 73 percent African American. It is the principal city of and is included in the Bastrop, Louisiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Monroe-Bastrop, Louisiana Combined Statistical Area. History Bastrop was founded by the Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, a Dutch businessman accused as an embezzler.
