Heman Allen (of Colchester)
Heman Allen (February 23, 1779April 7, 1852) was an American lawyer, politician and ambassador from Colchester, Vermont. He served as a U.S. Representative and as America's first United States Minister Plenipotentiary to Chile. Biography Allen was born in Poultney, Vermont Republic on February 23, 1779, the son of Heber Allen (1743-1782) and Sarah (Owen) Allen (1748-1787). He attended the common schools, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1795. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1801. He began the practice of law in Colchester, Vermont. He was town clerk of Colchester from 1807 until 1817. He served as Sheriff of Chittenden County from 1808 until 1810, when he was succeeded by Heman Lowry. Allen was Chief Justice of the Chittenden County court from 1811 until 1814. He was treasurer of the University of Vermont in 1815. Heman Swift
Heman Swift (October 14, 1733 – November 12, 1814) was a hero of the American Revolutionary War, known as General Washington's Colonel. He was a Colonel in the Connecticut State Regiment from July to December 1776, the 7th Connecticut Regiment from January 1777 to January 1781 and the 2nd Connecticut Regiment from January 1781 to June 1783. He was brevetted Brigadier-General on September 30, 1783 and was discharged in December 1783. He was an Original Member of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati. Heman Marion Sweatt
Heman Marion Sweatt (December 11, 1912 – October 3, 1982) was an African-American civil rights activist who confronted Jim Crow laws. He is best known for the '' Sweatt v. Painter'' lawsuit, which challenged the "separate but equal" doctrine and was one of the earliest of the events that led to the desegregation of American higher education. Early life Heman Marion Sweatt (nicknamed "Bill") was born on December 11, 1912, in Houston, Texas, the fourth of six children born to James Leonard Sweatt and Ella Rose Perry. James Sweatt had attended Jack Yates High School, graduated in 1930, after which he attended Prairie View Normal School and became a school teacher. Later he worked as a principal in Beaumont and then moved to Houston for better economic opportunity. Heman grew up in a relatively desegregated area of Houston, the third ward on Chenevert Street. Heman Lowry
Heman Lowry (September 4, 1778 - January 5, 1848) was a county, state and federal government official in Vermont. He was a delegate to two state constitutional conventions (1814, 1828). Lowry was also the longtime sheriff of Chittenden County (1810-1813, 1815-1827, 1835-1836). In addition, he served twice as U.S. Marshal for Vermont (1829-1835, 1837-1841). Life Lowry was born in North East, New York on September 4, 1778, the son of Thomas Lowry and Phoebe (Benedict) Lowry. The Lowry family (sometimes spelled Lowrey) moved to Jericho, Vermont in 1789, and after completing his education Lowry became a farmer in Jericho. Heman Allen (June 14, 1777 – December 11, 1844) was an American lawyer and politician from Milton, Vermont. He served as a U.S. Representative. Biography Allen was born in Ashfield (now Deerfield, Massachusetts) to Enoch Allen and Mercy Belding Allen. He attended an academy in Chesterfield, New Hampshire for two years before moving to Grand Isle, Vermont. He read law with Elnathan Keyes of Burlington and Bates Turner of St. Albans. Allen was admitted to the bar in 1803. He began the practice of law in Milton, and was the first resident lawyer in Milton. Allen served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1810 to 1814, 1816 to 1817, 1822, and 1824 to 1826. He moved to Burlington in 1828 and continued the practice of law.
