Cuthbert Hely
Cuthbert Hely was an English lutenist and composer who was active during the first half of the 17th century. Life Nothing so far is known about his life. It may be assumed, though, that Hely was taught to play the lute by musicians of John Dowland's generation. If so, Cuthbert Hely may have been born around 1570. It was believed that Hely may have been Lord Herbert's lute teacher and that he was the compiler of Lord Herbert's lute book. Both these points seem unlikely, though, as Lord Herbert, by his own account, learned the lute around 1603 "with very little or no teaching," and Hely's contributions to Lord Herbert's lute book are only found in the hand of "Scribe C," whose entries are the latest in the manuscript, datable to 1639-1640. It is uncertain if the composer is identical with a certain Cuthbert Hely who lived in Ludlow, England, during this era. Works Eight compositions by Cuthbert Hely - four fantasias, three preludes, and a sarabande - are to be found in th ...

Frederick Augustus Hely
Frederick Augustus Hely (1794 – 8 September 1836), a public servant and settler of colonial Australia, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland. He was the son of Colonel Forbes Francis Hely. In New South Wales At eighteen years of age, in the year 1812, he married Georgina Lindsay Bucknell. While there is no evidence of the actual time when Hely came to Australia, it is known that he was given the post of Principal Superintendent of the Convicts in New South Wales sometime in early 1823. However, it was later in the year that he arrived in Sydney, with his wife and children, to actually take up the post (a post he would hold throughout the entirety of the rest of his life). Hely held several other additional positions of public and social influence becoming a justice of the peace in 1825 and president of the Board of Magistrates in 1826. The year following, he became acting superintendent of police, and, in 1831, was appointed a member of the Assignment Board. Later, in 1832, ...

Hovenden Hely
Hovenden Hely (1823 – 8 October 1872) was an Australian explorer and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for one term between 1856 and 1857. Early life Hely was the son of Frederick Augustus Hely, an Irish public servant who was appointed as the Superintendent of Convicts in 1823. He was educated at The King's School, Parramatta and was initially employed as a clerk in the Colonial Secretary's office. He took part in the 1846-47 expedition of Ludwig Leichhardt but was accused by Leichhardt of indolence, disloyalty and "disgusting" behaviour. Nonetheless, he was put in charge of the official expedition to find Leichhardt in 1852. After 1841 Hely managed his deceased father's estates in the Brisbane Water district including Wyoming Cottage. He inherited a fifth share of the estate when he turned 21 and borrowed heavily against it, to finance a trip to England in 1858. As a result of these debts, Hely was bankrupted in 1865. John Hely
Sir John Hely (born c. 1650 – died 7 April 1701) was an English-born judge in Ireland, who held office as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer, and who was the founder of the prominent landowning Hely family of Foulkscourt Castle, Johnstown, County Kilkenny. The family is chiefly remembered for developing the village of Johnstown. He was born in London, eldest son of James Hely. He entered Lincoln's Inn in 1670 and was called to the Bar in 1679. Marriage In 1685 he made a seemingly advantageous marriage to Meliora Gorges, younger daughter of the merchant Ferdinando Gorges of Eye Manor, Hertfordshire, and his wife Meliora Hilliard. Gorges had supposedly made a fortune in Barbados, although there were many who claimed that he was simply a financial schemer (in modern parlance, a confidence trickster) whose fortune was largely imaginary, and he was already in serious financial difficulties by 1685. Hely and Meliora had at least five children: their eldest son, George, was the founder ...
