Helmut Degen
Helmut Degen (born 14 January 1911 in Aglasterhausen – died 2 October 1995 in Trossingen) was a German composer. Degen studied composition with Wilhelm Maler and Philipp Jarnach; and score and instrumentation with Ernst Gernot Klussmann at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne and the University of Bonn, writing his dissertation on Baroque librettist Friedrich Christian Bressand. He later taught theory at the Duisburg Conservatory and later at the Hochschule für Musikerziehung in Trossingen Trossingen ( Swabian: ''Drossinge'') is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Philipp Jarnach
Philipp Jarnach (26 July 1892 17 December 1982 in Börnsen) was a German composer of modern music ("Neue Musik"), pianist, teacher, and conductor. Jarnach was born in Noisy-le-Sec, France, the son of a Spanish sculptor and a Flemish mother. Besides composer such as Hindemith, Jarnach is considered one of the leading and formative composer of the late German Romantic and early modern ("Neue Musik") eras. Until 1914 he lived in Paris, where he studied piano under Édouard Risler and harmony under Albert Lavignac at the Conservatoire de Paris. During the First World War he was a student of Ferruccio Busoni in Zürich. He later completed the opera ''Doktor Faust'' which Busoni had left unfinished on his death in 1924. In the 1920s Jarnach worked in Berlin as a pianist, conductor and composer. In 1927 he became a teacher in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. Friedrich Christian Bressand
Friedrich Christian Bressand (c.1670 – 11 April 1699) was a Baroque German poet and opera librettist. Life Bressand was born in Durlach. His brief life was spent predominantly in the service of German courts. He was born the son of the Margrave of Durlach's personal cook, but was forced to flee the town when it was destroyed by French troops in 1689. He found refuge through family connections at the court of Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, a patron of opera who built an opera house, the , in 1690. The house stood until 1861. The Duke himself wrote opera librettos and enlisted Bressand to assist him in the organization of theatrical events. They started with German arrangements of French and Italian operas and Bressand soon fashioned a significant number of his own librettos, which evidently became popular with composers, given the number of composers who set his texts.
