The Helmet is a breed of fancy pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding Selective breeding (also called artificial selection) is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal or plant mal .... Helmets, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, are all descendants from the rock pigeon (''Columba livia''). The breed has medium face, short face, plain-head and crested varieties. Helmet pigeons have been referenced since the early 15th century and appear to have origins in Germany.
