Hell III
''Hell III'' is the third studio album by multi-instrumentalist M.S.W.'s Salem-based doom metal solo project Hell. Originally released on October 11, 2012, the album was available on cassette through Eternal Warfare, on vinyl through Pesanta, and digitally through M.S.W.'s own label, LowerYourHead. ''Hell III'' was performed in its entirety on the project's 2016 tour. Background and composition Hell, a one-man project, concluded a trilogy of albums with ''Hell III''. While the series began as pure doom metal, ''Hell II'' and, to a greater degree, ''Hell III'' incorporate black metal and funeral doom aspects into the music. Included with the moments of weight, aggression, extremely distorted guitar, and rasped vocals are periods of somber melancholy. Hell is an American doom metal solo project formed in 2008 by M.S.W., a multi-instrumentalist from Salem, Oregon. Hell began as a creative outlet for M.S.W., but it eventually gained momentum and grew to include a touring band. Sludge Metal
Sludge metal (also known as sludge or sludge doom) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that originated through combining elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is typically harsh and abrasive, often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos. The Melvins from the US state of Washington produced the first sludge metal albums in the mid-late 1980s. Characteristics The key characteristics of both sludge and doom metal are a slow tempo combined with down-tuned, heavily- distorted guitars to deliver the heaviest feel that is possible. Drone Doom
Drone metal or drone doom is a style of heavy metal that melds the slow tempos and heaviness of doom metal with the long-duration tones of drone music. Drone metal is sometimes associated with post-metal or experimental metal. Heathen Harvest
Heathen Harvest was an Internet blog devoted to music criticism, music news, and interviews.
