The Helio Aircraft Company was an American aircraft manufacturer founded in 1948. History The Koppen-Bollinger Aircraft Corporation was founded by Otto Koppen and Lynn Bollinger in Massachusetts in 1948 to develop a light STOL utility aircraft. Initially located at Boston Metropolitan Airport in Canton, Massachusetts, it was renamed the Helio Aircraft Corporation by the time manufacture of the Helio Courier commenced in the early 1950s at a plant in Pittsburg, Kansas. The plant, located at the Atkinson Municipal Airport was acquired by Helio from Mid-States Manufacturing Company in July 1956 and was almost destroyed by a wildfire in March 1966. In 1959, the company announced it was moving its factory to Tucson, Arizona. Atkinson Municipal Airport
Atkinson Municipal Airport is three miles northwest of Pittsburg, in Crawford County, Kansas, United States. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''general aviation'' facility. History It was established as Pittsburg Airport in April 1940. It was taken over by the United States Army Air Force on May 25, 1942, as a basic (level 1) pilot training airfield. It was assigned to USAAF Gulf Coast Training Center (later Central Flying Training Command). The airport conducted contract basic flying training by McFarland Flying Service. Fairchild PT-19s were the primary trainers used. It also had several PT-17 Stearmans and a few P-40 Warhawks assigned. The flight school also operated two auxiliary airfields in the local area. A total of 20 were built during the Vietnam War, with most of the aircraft being later sold to the Khmer Air Force. Helio H-500 Twin Courier
The Helio Twin Courier is a twin-engined version of the Helio Courier, with very few examples being produced. Design and development Known by Helio as the model H-500 this STOL aircraft mounted twin Lycoming engines on top of the high-set wing, close to the fuselage. With the engines mounted in this manner, lateral and over-the-nose visibility were much improved while the propellers were kept clear of cabin doors and away from possible debris damage during rough field operations. This was a tail-wheel design, so the vertical component of propeller thrust assisted STOL take-off performance from rough fields. In 1967 or 68, work was started on a redesign of the Twin Courier in a tricycle-gear configuration for the commercial market, since many firms which desired STOL capability had regulations which required multi-engine aircraft. Pittsburg is a city in Crawford County, Kansas, United States, located in southeast Kansas near the Missouri state border. It is the most populous city in Crawford County and southeast Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 20,646. It is home of Pittsburg State University.
