Helene Von Damm
Helene Antonia von Damm ( Winter; born May 4, 1938) is an Austrian-born American diplomat who served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria, and also worked as an assistant to President Ronald Reagan. Early life Helene Antonia von Damm, born Helene Antonia Winter in Linz (Austria) in 1938, grew up in Ulmerfeld-Hausmening (now part of Amstetten, Austria), where here father worked as engineer (German title: Betriebsingenieur) at the ''Neusiedler Papierfabrik'' (that was since 1918 part of the Neusiedler AG, now Mondi). She had a tumultuous childhood, marked by the Second World War, the post-war Soviet occupation, and the death of her father from tuberculosis when she was twelve years old. She recalled that she "had a difficult time digesting" the things she witnessed as a child, and dreamed of "a better life in places far away." Relations between the United States have been continuous since that time except for two interruptions during World War I and World War II. Sacher Hotel
Hotel Sacher is a five-star luxury hotel in Vienna, Austria, facing the Vienna State Opera in the city's central Innere Stadt district. It is famous for the specialty of the house, the Sachertorte, a chocolate cake with apricot filling. There is also an art gallery in the hotel, with works from the 19th century. The 1980 United States presidential election was the 49th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 4, 1980. Republican nominee Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent Democratic President Jimmy Carter in a landslide victory. This was the second successive election in which the incumbent president was defeated, after Carter himself defeated Gerald Ford four years earlier in 1976, marking only the second time in American history that this occurred, after 1892. Additionally, it was only the third time an incumbent Democrat lost re-election, and only the second (and last) time a Republican has defeated an incumbent Democrat. The Great Society was a set of domestic programs in the United States launched by Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964–65. The term was first coined during a 1964 commencement address by President Lyndon B. Johnson at the University of Michigan and came to represent his domestic agenda. The main goal was the total elimination of poverty and racial injustice. New major federal programs that addressed education, medical care, urban problems, rural poverty, and transportation were launched during this period. The program and its initiatives were subsequently promoted by him and fellow Democrats in Congress in the 1960s and years following.
