Helen Plummer
Helen Plummer Gatch (''née'' Plummer; 1862–1942) was an American painter and photographer known for depicting family members and views of the Oregon Coast. Early life and education Born in Alton, Illinois, on April 13, 1862, she was one of three daughters of Dr. Orlando P. S. Plummer and Sarah B. Cool. After the death of her mother, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1864. In 1885, she married Claude Gatch (1859–1939), and they moved to Salem, where he was elected mayor in 1893. Their two children were Orytha "Ryth" (born 1886) and Thomas Leigh "Tam" (1891-1954).The family moved to Berkeley, California, in 1912. Critical reception Biographer Roger Hull wrote that Gatch was once a central figure in Pacific Coast pictorial photography, but that she was "an entirely displaced person in the standard histories of the medium." Hull cites as possible reasons for this neglect of her work that it was " 'set aside' for reasons of provincialism, changes in aesthetic tast ...

Portrait Of American Photographer, Helen Gatch, Taken 1905-06 (cropped)
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. History Prehistorical portraiture Plastered human skulls were reconstructed human skulls that were made in the ancient Levant between 9000 and 6000 BC in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period. They represent some of the oldest forms of art in the Middle East and demonstrate that the prehistoric population took great care in burying their ancestors below their homes. The skulls denote some of the earliest sculptural examples of portraiture in the history of art. Historical ...

Artists From Salem, Oregon
An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse refers to a practitioner in the visual arts only. However, the term is also often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (although less often for actors). "Artiste" (French for artist) is a variant used in English in this context, but this use has become rare. Use of the term "artist" to describe writers is valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like used in criticism. Dictionary definitions The ''Oxford English Dictionary'' defines the older broad meanings of the term "artist": * A learned person or Master of Arts. * One who pursues a practical science, traditionally medicine, astrology, alchemy, chemistry. * A follower of a pursuit in which skill comes by study or practice. * A follower of a manual art, such a ...
