Helen Lundeberg
Helen Lundeberg (1908–1999) was a Southern Californian painter. Along with her husband Lorser Feitelson, she is credited with establishing the Post-Surrealist movement. Her artistic style changed over the course of her career, and has been described variously as Post-Surrealism, Hard-edge painting and Subjective Classicism. Early life and education Helen Lundeberg was born in Chicago in on June 24, 1908, the eldest child of second-generation Swedish parents. In 1912 her family moved to Pasadena, California. As a child, she was an exceptional student and an avid reader. Her intellectual aptitude earned her inclusion in a Stanford University "Study of Gifted Children", which looked at the characteristics and development of children who ranked in the top 1% in California schools. Kent Twitchell
Kent Twitchell (born August 17, 1942, Lansing, Michigan) is an American muralist who is most active in Los Angeles. He is most famous for his larger-than-life mural portraits, often of celebrities and artists. His murals are realism not photorealism according to Twitchell. Biography Twitchell's parents, Robert and Doris, were farmers like their parents and grandparents. Kent started doing art when he was three years old. His first mentor was his mother's brother, Angus Berry, who was an eccentric artist. As a kid all through high school he painted signs and lettered trucks for local businesses. Knud Merrild
Knud Merrild Nielsen (10 May 1894 – 31 December 1954) was a Danish painter, sculptor and ceramicist. Life Merrild was born in Selling, Ødum parish, in Favrskov Municipality. He worked in ceramics with the potter G. A. Eifrig at the Københavns Lervarefabrik in Valby. He was part of the circle around the avant-garde art magazine '' Klingen'' and was a friend of Vilhelm Lundstrøm. In 1921 he emigrated to the United States, where he lived in many different places, including with D.H. Lawrence in Taos, New Mexico, from 1922 to 1923, and was also a friend of the American writer Henry Miller. He later wrote about both of them. Merrild eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1927, where he remained until he returned to Denmark in 1954. He died in Copenhagen in the same year. Lucien Labaudt
Lucien Adolphe Labaudt (May 14, 1880 – December 12, 1943) was a French-born American painter based in San Francisco, California. His best-known work may be ''Powell Street'' (1934), a mural in fresco at Coit Tower that he created for the Public Works of Art Project. Biography Labaudt was born in Paris on May 14, 1880. In 1906, he emigrated to the United States and first settled in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1910, he moved to San Francisco in a studio. In 1919, Labaudt started teaching at the California School of Fine Arts. One of his students was painter Nell Sinton. He painted two murals in the lobby of the Spring Street Courthouse in Los Angeles: ''Life on the Old Spanish and American Ranchos'' in 1938 and ''Aerodynamism'' in 1941. Harold Lehman
Harold Lehman (1913–2006) was an American artist known for his murals for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Lehman was born in 1913 in New York City. He moved to California as a teenager and attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. There he met and became close friends with Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston (formerly Phillip Goldstein), and Reuben Kadish. Reuben Kadish (January 29, 1913 – September 20, 1992) was an American artist, specializing as a sculptor, draughtsman, muralist, painter, and printmaker. In his later career he also taught art history and sculpture in New York City. Biography Early life Born in Chicago to immigrant parents from Kovno (now Kaunas) in Czarist Russia (now Lithuania), he was the oldest of three sons. The family moved to Los Angeles, California in 1920 and it was there that Kadish developed strong roots and lifelong friendships. Philip Guston
Philip Guston (born Phillip Goldstein, June 27, 1913 – June 7, 1980), was a Canadian American painter, printmaker, muralist and draftsman. Early in his five decade career, muralist David Siquieros described him as one of "the most promising painters in either the US or Mexico," in reference to his antifascist fresco ''The Struggle Against Terror,'' which "includes the hooded figures that became a lifelong symbol of bigotry for the artist." Grace Clements (artist)
Grace Richardson Clements (1905–1969) was an American painter, mosaicist, and art critic. She was active as an artist in the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s. Early life and education Clements was born in Oakland, California on June 8, 1905. She married Traverse Clements in 1923. They divorced in 1928. She studied art under Kenneth Hayes Miller and Boardman Robinson in New York City from 1925 to 1930.
