Helen Lee Caldwell (1909 – March 13, 1991) was an American fashion designer of children's clothes. She founded her own label, Designs by Helen Lee Inc., in 1955. Biography She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1909. She studied at University of Tennessee before moving to New York City and studying at the Art Students League of New York and at the Traphagen School of Fashion (class of 1926, Costume Design). She worked as a fashion designer for Youngland Inc., Sears, Roebuck & Company, Saks Fifth Avenue, Alyssa and her own company, Designs by Helen Lee Inc., creating clothes for boys and girls. Helen Lee is an artist, glassblower, designer, and educator. Education and career Lee was born in Summit, NJ in 1978 in Summit, New Jersey. Lee graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design with a concentrations in Architectural Design and Writing. In 2006 she earned a Master of Arts with a concentration in Glass from the Rhode Island School of Design. Lee has worked as a designer and glass artist for over ten years. She is currently an associate professor and Head of Glass at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work deals themes of language as signifier of meaning and physical form. She describes her practice as an "examination of boundary, duality, and transformation—dwelling on the moments in which breath becomes sound, sound becomes spoken, the spoken word turns written, and the written word is shaped into dimensional form by her own breath." Helen Lee () is a Korean-Canadian film director. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she emigrated to Canada at the age of four and grew up in Scarborough, Ontario. Interested in film at a young age, she took film studies at the University of Toronto and, later, New York University. While in university she was influenced by gender and minority theories, as reflected in her first film, the short ''Sally's Beauty Spot'' (1990). While continuing her studies she produced two more films before taking a five-year hiatus to live in Korea beginning in 1995. After her return, she released another short film and her feature film debut, ''The Art of Woo'' (2001). She continues to produce films, although at a reduced rate. Lee's films often deal with gender and racial issues, reflecting the state of East Asians in modern society; a common theme in her work is sexuality, with several films featuring interracial relationships. She is the CEO of ''Diagnostics for the Real World''. She has been based at the University of Cambridge since 1996. Career Helen Lee received her PhD from Cornell University. She started her career in diagnostics in Paris at the French National Blood Transfusion Centre. She has been associate professor as the head of the Diagnostics Development Unit at the University of Cambridge, where she developed simple robust HIV tests for developing countries. The diagnostic kit, named "SAMBA" (simple amplification-based assay) was tested in sub-saharan Africa with Médecins Sans Frontières.
