Helder Moutinho
Hélder António Moutinho Paiva dos Santos, artistically known as Helder Moutinho ( Oeiras, 21 February 1969) is a Portuguese singer and songwriter, and one of the most distinguished artists in the Fado genre. He's also the brother of two renowned Fado singers, Camané and Pedro Moutinho. Origins Born in Oeiras in 1969, Helder's family was deeply rooted in traditional Fado, whether singing, composing or writing poems, being is great-grandfather José Júlio da Silva Paiva (Fado composer and singer of the late 19th century) a prime example of this. In his youth and late teens, Helder attended various ''tertúlias'' and traditional Fado circles, further enticing the young Helder to take a chance on composing and writing poems. Camané
Camané (born Carlos Manuel Moutinho Paiva dos Santos Duarte, 20 December 1966 in Oeiras) is a male vocalist and a forerunner of the new generation of fado male singers. "The greatest fadista since Amália Rodrigues and Maria da Fé," is how British biographer David Bret, describes him. He started gaining recognition in Portugal in 1979 after winning the 'Grande Noite do Fado' (Great Fado Night). After this first step, he continued to consistently work toward commercial success with critically well-received albums and a concert tour that touched upon both large and small venues, including 'Casas de Fado' (fado clubs) in Lisbon. He toured outside Portugal to sold-out audiences throughout his European tour. Maria Severa Onofriana (26 July 182030 November 1846), also known simply as A Severa, was a Portuguese fado singer and guitarist. She is regarded, in her short life, as the first fado singer to have risen to fame, attaining a near-mythical status after her death. Fado has been described as the Portuguese expression of "the blues", and ''fado'' roughly means 'fate'. Biography Maria Severa Onofriana was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in the neighborhood of Madragoa in 1820. She was the daughter of Severo Manuel and Ana Gertrudes. Severa's father was of Portuguese Gypsy ancestry. Her mother was originally from Ovar, migrated to Lisbon with Ovar fishermen, worked as a prostitute and became the owner of a tavern. Pedro da Silva Moutinho (born 9 September 1979) is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a centre forward. He spent most of his career in Scotland with Falkirk (three spells, 161 overall appearances and 23 goals). Professionally, other than in his own country, he also competed in Cyprus and Romania. Club career Born in Santo Tirso, Porto District, Moutinho moved to C.S. Marítimo from amateurs U.D. Rio Maior, but spent the better part of his early years with the former's reserves. He also served two loans whilst under contract, including a two-year spell at F.C. Penafiel of the Segunda Liga. Fado
Fado (; "destiny, fate") is a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. Fado historian and scholar Rui Vieira Nery states that "the only reliable information on the history of fado was orally transmitted and goes back to the 1820s and 1830s at best. But even that information was frequently modified within the generational transmission process that made it reach us today." Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fate and melancholy.
