Heinrich Riikoja
Heinrich Roman Riikoja (until 1924 Reichenbach; 8 March 1891 Rakke – 31 October 1988 Tartu) was an Estonian zoologist and hydrobiologist. From 1910 to 1918, he studied at the University of Tartu, initially chemistry and later natural sciences. He participated in the Estonian War of Independence. From 1919 to 1958 he taught at the University of Tartu. From 1920 onward, he directed investigations of Estonian inland bodies of water. He is known as the founder of Estonian hydrobiology. Among other things, he compiled a list of Estonian lakes and a list of Estonian fishes. In 1940 he was the rector of the University of Tartu. From 1922 to 1943, he was the representative of Estonia to International Society of Limnology. Jaan Port
Jaan Port (9 February 1891 in Raassilla, Holstre Parish (now, Viljandi Parish) – 24 January 1950 in Tartu) was an Estonian botanist. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1926. From 1927 to 1929 Port complemented his gardening knowledge in Germany. Between 1930 and 1937 he worked as the prime gardener in the Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu. In 1932 he received the PhD in botany. Later 1937–1940 Port served as the director of Tartu Teachers' Seminar. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe". Johannes Voldemar Veski
Johannes Voldemar Veski (27 June 1873 Vaidavere, Tartu County – 28 March 1968 Tartu) was an Estonian linguist. From 1896 until 1899, he studied at the University of Tartu; at the beginning he studied religion and thereafter nature sciences. From 1920 until 1938, he taught at the University of Tartu. Since 1946 he was a member of Estonian Academy of Sciences. 1946-1968 he was the chairperson of Mother Tongue Society. His activity was primarily related to the developing Estonian language terminology, and Estonian language planning. In total, he was an editor or compiler of 30 specialised dictionaries (all of them consist of about 150,000 terms). International Society Of Limnology
The International Society of Limnology (SIL) is an international scientific society that disseminates information among limnology, limnologists, those who study all aspects of inland waters, including their physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and Water resources management, management. It was founded by August Thienemann and Einar Naumann in 1922 as the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology and Societas Internationalis Limnologiae. It had about 2.800 members in 2008. SIL celebrated its 100th anniversary at a meeting in Berlin, Germany in August 2022.
