Heerenveen, Netherlands
Heerenveen (, ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location to dig peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat"). Heerenveen was not one of the traditional eleven cities in Friesland (Fryslân) as it did not have so-called city rights. However, it is now one of the larger municipalities of the province. The windmill ''Welgelegen'' or ''Tjepkema's Molen'' is the only survivor of seventeen which have stood in Heerenveen. Akkrum
Akkrum is a village in the Dutch province of Friesland. It is located in the municipality Heerenveen, about 17 km south of the city of Leeuwarden. Akkrum had about 3,395 inhabitants in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Ackrom. The etymology is unclear. Akkrum started as a ''terp'' (artificial living mound) village, and developed into a linear settlement which served as the regional centre. It started to grow when the main road Leeuwarden-Zwolle and later a railway line were built next to Akkrum. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1759 as a replacement of a medieval church. The tower dates from 1882. In 1840, Akkrum was home to 1,121 people. The polder mill Mellemolen was built in 1849 to drain excess water from the Polslootpolder. Nieuwehorne () is a village in Heerenveen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,450 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Hoerne cum duabus capellis, and means "the new corner of the river". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from Oudehorne. The village developed at an intersection of roads. The Dutch Reformed church dates from 1778 and was restored around 1850. In 1840, Nieuwehorne was home to 293 people. Nes, Heerenveen
Nes is a Dutch village in the municipality of Heerenveen, Friesland. It is situated in the northern part of the country. Since the village is close to Akkrum, they usually speak about Akkrum-Nes. History The mound, on which the belfry ( Dutch: Klokkenstoel) stands, is a relic of the monastery Nesser (Nesker Konvent). The monastery was founded around 1200 by the Teutonic Order. The monastery had a lot of land in ownership and has been very important for both the village of Nes, as the extraction and management of the surrounding area. The monastery is at the beginning of the 17th century on decline, the church "St. Nicholas" however, lasted longer, but eventually the church was demolished because it was on decline. Mildam () is a village in Heerenveen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 685 in January 2017. Louis Le Roy's "eco-cathedral" is located here. There is a windmill in the village, De Tjongermolen. History The village was first mentioned in 1523 as tho Meyledam, and either means middle dam or dam of Meila (person). Mildam developed in the 18th century near a place where the river could be crossed. Nowadays, it is more of a suburb of Heerenveen. The current Dutch Reformed church was rebuilt in 1726.
