''Heer Syal'' is a pre-partition Punjabi film released in 1938. It is the second film directed by Kishan Dev Mehra, along with assistant director M. M. Billoo Mehra. It starred new actors Balo and M. ''Heer Ranjha'' (or ''Heer and Ranjha'') ( pnb, , ਹੀਰ ਰਾਂਝਾ ) is one of several popular tragic romances of Punjab, other important ones being "Sohni Mahiwal", "Mirza Sahiban" and " Sassi Punnhun". There are several poetic narrations of the story, the most famous being ''Heer'' by Waris Shah written in 1766. Heer Ranjha (Gurmukhi: ਹੀਰ ਰਾਂਝਾ; Shahmukhi & Urdu: ) is a Pakistani Punjabi film released in 1970, based on the classic epic story of Heer Ranjha by the Sufi poet Waris Shah. Plot The film revolves around Heer (Firdous), a girl born into a wealthy family, and Ranjha (Ejaz Durrani) the youngest of four brothers, whose journey from his own village takes him to the village where Heer lives after the wives of his brothers refuse him food and mock him. Here, he meets and falls in love with Heer after she offers him work tending her family's cattle. However her jealous uncle Kaido has other plans and will stop at nothing to make sure their marriage does not happen. When Heer is subsequently forced by her father to marry another man, Saida Khera, she broken-heartedly enters a shrine. ''Heer Raanjha'' is a 1970 Indian Hindi-language romantic musical film directed by Chetan Anand and produced by his son Ketan Anand. The film stars Raaj Kumar, Priya Rajvansh, Pran, Prithviraj Kapoor, Ajit, Jayant, Sonia Sahni, Kamini Kaushal, Indrani Mukherjee, Achla Sachdev and Tun Tun. The film's music is by Madan Mohan. The film is based on the legend of Heer Ranjha, the epic poem ''Heer'' by Punjabi poet, Waris Shah, written in 1766. The film is unique in the fact that the entire film and its dialogue is in verse, Kaifi Azmi writing the verse dialogue. Waris Shah
Waris Shah ( pa, ; ; 1722–1798) was a Punjabi Sufi poet of the Chishti order, known for his contribution to Punjabi literature. He is primarily known as the author of ''Heer Ranjha'' . Background Waris Shah was born in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab, present-day Pakistan into a reputed Sayyid family and was a descendant of Sayyid Muhammad Al-Makki through his son Sayyid Badruddin. His father's name was Gulsher Shah and mother's name was Kamal Banu. Waris's parents are said to have died when he was young. Waris spent years in search of the perfect spiritual guide. Waris Shah acknowledged himself to be a disciple of an ustad from Kasur, namely Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza from whom he received his education. After completing his education, Waris moved to Malka Hans, a village twelve kilometres north of Pakpattan.
