The extinct genus ''Hedstroemia'' was once thought to be a rivulariacean cyanobacterium. Porostromata
"Porostromata" is an antiquated form taxon that refers to fossil cyanobacteria. The term porostromate is also used as a descriptor of textures and microstructure of stromatolites and oncolites which contain tubules or other cellular structures. The group was defined by Pia (1927) as containing calcareous algae bearing calcified tubules; these may run parallel to the growth surface as in ''Girvanella'', ''Sphaerocodium'' or perpendicular, as in ''Hedstroemia'', '' Ortonella'', and '' Mitcheldaenia''; however, in 1937 Pia restricted the group to only ''Girvanella'' and ''Sphaerocodium'', placing the other genera in the Codiaceae. In reality it seems that most or all of the species included in "Porostromata" represent fossils of cyanobacteria. Monty (1981) advocated continued use of porostramata in an informal sense to describe a habit and structure of bacterial colonies, rather than in a taxonomic sense. August Rothpletz
Friedrich August Rothpletz (28 April 1853, in Neustadt an der Haardt – 27 January 1918, in Oberstdorf) was a German geologist and paleontologist. Biography From 1875 to 1880 he conducted geological mapping in Saxony as part of the ''Sächsischen Geologischen Landesanstalt'' (Saxon Geological Survey), afterwards receiving his doctorate from the University of Leipzig (1882). Two years later he obtained his habilitation at the University of Munich, where he taught classes in geology, Alpine tectonics and paleobotany. In 1894 he became an associate professor and in 1904 succeeded Karl von Zittel as professor of geology and paleontology at Munich.

Rivulariacea
The Rivulariaceae are a family of cyanobacteria within the Nostocales in which the filaments (trichomes) are tapered from wider at the base to narrower at the tip. Solenopora
The extinct Solenoporaceae have traditionally been interpreted as a group of red algae ancestral to the Corallinales. The genus from which they take their name, ''Solenopora'', originates in the Ordovician. Unlike the Corallinaceae, this family has large vegetative cells and an undifferentiated thallus. Additionally there are external, non-calcified sporangia. The differences in structure suggest that the holotype is not an alga at all, but rather is a chaetetid sponge. Post-Palaeozoic specimens therefore require re-classification. However, some algal taxa are still classified within the genus.
