Heddal IL
Heddal is a village and parish in Notodden municipality in Telemark County, Norway. History The parish of ''Hitterdal'' was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Notodden was separated from Heddal both as a city and a municipality of its own, in 1913. Heddal was subsequently merged with Notodden January 1, 1964. The Heddal clerical district consists of two parishes: Hitterdal and Lisleherad. Etymology The Old Norse form of the name was ''Heitrardalr''. The first element is the genitive case of a former name of the River ''Heitr'', now known as Heddøla, a tributary of the Skien River. The last element is ''dalr'' meaning dale or valley. The original meaning of the river name is unknown. Until 1918 the name was written ''Hitterdal'' or ''Hiterdal''. From 1918 on, the name has been ''Heddal''. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Olea Crøger
Olea Crøger (July 17, 1801 – November 21, 1855) was a Norwegian music teacher who was a pioneer in the collection of folk music and folklore. She is considered to have been one of the first to systematically collect folk songs and melodies in Telemark. Olea Styhr Crøger was born in Heddal in Telemark, Norway. She was the daughter of Johannes Crøger (1753-1830) and Helle Margrethe Neumann (1764-1849). She was the daughter of a parish priest and a mother who taught her song and music. As an adult, she taught singing at Kviteseid Seminar, one of the first public teacher's college in Norway. On her own, she began to collect old folk songs and melodies. By one account, she responded to the call for citizens to collect disappearing vestiges of Norwegian folk balladry. Heddal Open Air Museum (''Heddal bygdetun'') is an open-air museum located in the village of Heddal at Notodden in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. Heddal Open Air Museum is located near the historic Heddal Stave Church. Heddal Museum has various buildings representative of the history of local farming dating from the Middle Ages and up to the 1930s. ''Fyrileivstugu'', a living room interior dating from 1932, was transferred to Heddal Museum in 1990. It was the work of noted wood carver and rosemaling artist, Olav Fyrileiv (1875–1975) who was a Telemark native. Heddal Stave Church
Heddal Stave Church ( nb, Heddal stavkirke, nn, Heddal stavkyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Notodden Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Heddal. It is the church for the Heddal parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The wooden, triple nave stave church was built in a long church design around the year 1200 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 180 people. The church is one of the 28 surviving stave churches in Norway and it is considered to be the largest of the stave churches. Hans Herbjørnsrud
Hans Herbjørnsrud (born 2 January 1938) is a Norwegian author of short stories. His works frequently play with the differences between Norwegian languages Bokmål and Nynorsk and the various Norwegian dialects. His stories' characters sometimes playfully mix and invent languages, sometimes become caught up in their linguistic games and start losing their identity. Herbjørnsrud was born in Heddal. He grew up on a remote farm in Telemark and became a farmer himself. After working as a teacher for some time, he started writing in his early forties and published his first collection of stories, ''Vitner'' (''Witnesses''), in 1979. This collection was recognized as the best literary début of the year with Tarjei Vesaas' debutantpris. Since then, he has published six more collections of stories, which have been well received by critics. Sigmund Groven
Sigmund Groven (born 16 March 1946 in Heddal, Telemark) is a Norwegian classical harmonica player, today considered one of the world's leading classical harmonica players. He plays with a large number of the world's leading musicians and orchestras, and he has made 23 recordings yet in his own name (compilations not counted). His repertoire ranges from popular and folk music to his own compositions, from Bach to contemporary music. Influences and early career Groven grew up in a family with rich music and cultural traditions. His uncle was the folk musician and composer, Eivind Groven (1901–77). Thorolf Bugge
Thorolf Bugge (1 October 1879 – 21 May 1935) was a Norwegian trade unionist and politician for the Labour and Communist parties. He was born in Heddal as a son of district physician Johan Carl Bugge (1847–1902) and Christine Theodora Drolsum (1854–1882). He was a grandson of Ulrik Bugge. He had middle school education, and also studied at Bergen Technical School. He was hired at a post office in Vardø in 1898, and when postmaster Adam Egede-Nissen was a member of Parliament, Bugge was acting postmaster in Vardø from 1901 to 1906. He then started working at a farm and in the company Sydvaranger. He became chairman of the trade union Nordens Klippe from 1907 to 1908, but for his activism he was blacklisted. Notodden
Notodden () is a List of towns and cities in Norway, city and List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Vestfold og Telemark Counties of Norway, county, Norway. It is part of the Districts of Norway, traditional region of Øst-Telemark. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Notodden. Egil Bergsland
Egil Bergsland (born 2 September 1924 in Notodden, died 12 October 2007) was a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. He was elected to the Norwegian Parliament from Telemark in 1977, but was not re-elected in 1981. He had previously served as a deputy representative during the term 1973–1977. On the local level he was a member of Heddal municipal council from 1955 to 1964, and then of Notodden municipal council from 1964 to 1967 as deputy mayor. He served as mayor from 1971 to 1975. Hjartdøla
Hjartdøla is a river in Hjartdal municipality in Vestfold og Telemark, Norway. The river is formed at the convergence of Skjesvatnet, Breidvatnet and Bjordøla.
