Heckmondwike Railway Station
Heckmondwike railway station was one of two stations to serve the town of Heckmondwike, in the historical county of West Riding of Yorkshire, England, the other being . History First station Coordinates: The first station was opened as Heckmondwike on 18 July 1848 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It had a goods yard and a station building. The station closed on 9 August 1888 and was resited. Second station Coordinates: The station was resited to the west and opened as Heckmondwike on 9 August 1888. The goods yard was not moved from the original station. Its name was changed to Heckmondwike Central on 2 June 1924 but it was changed back to Heckmondwike on 12 June 1961 (As the other railway station in Heckmondwike, Heckmondwike Spen railway station, Heckmondwike Spen closed the previous year). Heckmondwike
Heckmondwike is a town in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England, south west of Leeds. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is close to Cleckheaton and Liversedge. It is mostly in the Batley and Spen parliamentary constituency, and had an estimated population of 17,066 in March 2001, reducing to 16,986 at the 2011 Census. Heckmondwike forms part of the Heavy Woollen District. Toponymy The origins of Heckmondwike are in Old English. First recorded as ''Hedmundewic'' in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086, ''Hedmu''n''dewic'' in 1166, and as ''Hecmundewik'' sometime in the 13th century, the name seems to be from *''Hēahmundes wīc'', or 'Heahmund's dairy-farm'. History During Saxon times, Heckmondwike was a "berewick" or independent village in the manor of Gomersal, which, before 1066, was held by Dunstan and Gamel. Kirklees Council
Kirklees Council is the local authority providing most local government services for the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It is a metropolitan district council and one of five constituent councils of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. History Kirklees Council was established in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, with the first elections being held in advance in 1973. The council was initially a second-tier authority, with West Yorkshire County Council providing many key services.
