Hearts In San Francisco
''Hearts in San Francisco'' is an annual public art installation started in 2004 by the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation for the purpose of fundraising. The project is inspired by the international CowParade exhibit, in which cow sculptures are painted by various artists and installed in various cities throughout the world. The choice of hearts is inspired by the Tony Bennett song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Background Each year, uniform heart sculptures are painted by different artists and installed at locations throughout San Francisco, including Union Square. The heart sculptures are auctioned off at the end of each year's installation with the proceeds going to the foundation. San Francisco General Hospital
The Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is a Public hospital in San Francisco, California, under the purview of the city's Department of Public Health. It serves as the only Level I Trauma Center for the 1.5 million residents of San Francisco and northern San Mateo County. It is the largest acute inpatient and rehabilitation hospital for psychiatric patients in the city. Additionally, it is the only acute hospital in San Francisco that provides 24-hour psychiatric emergency services. In addition to the approximately 3,500 San Francisco municipal employees, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) provides approximately 1,500 employees (including physicians, nurses and ancillary personnel), and the SFGH serves as one of the teaching hospitals for the UCSF School of Medicine. Roy De Forest
Roy De Forest (11 February 1930 – 18 May 2007) was an American Painting, painter, Sculpture, sculptor, and teacher. He was involved in both the Funk art and Nut art movements in the Bay Area of California. De Forest's art is known for its quirky and comical fantasy lands filled with bright colors and creatures, most commonly dogs. Early life Roy De Forest was born in North Platte, Nebraska to migrant farm workers during the Great Depression. De Forest's family lost their farm in Nebraska due to the harsh economic conditions during the Great Depression and were forced to move to Yakima, Washington. In Yakima, the De Forests bought a new farm, where they harvested pears and plums. De Forest described the socioeconomic status of his family as "not well off." Monika Steiner
Monika Steiner (born 1972) is an artist and sculptor that lives in Fairfax, California. Personal life Monika Steiner was born in 1972 in Gysenstein, Switzerland. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and Teaching Credential at the University of Bern, and became a teacher at Bönigen elementary school, where she incorporated art into her classroom. In 2000 Steiner moved to the United States where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Sonoma State University. She currently splits her time between northern California and Bern. Her art at this time dealt with her internal struggles, such as the difficulty of experiencing and adapting to culture shock. Rigo 23 (born Ricardo Gouveia, 1966) is a Portuguese-born American muralist, painter, and political artist. He is known in the San Francisco community for having painted a number of large, graphic "sign" murals including: ''One Tree'' next to the U.S. Route 101 on-ramp at 10th and Bryant Street, ''Innercity Home'' on a large public housing structure, ''Sky/Ground'' on a tall abandoned building at 3rd and Mission Street, and ''Extinct'' over a Shell gas station. Rex Ray
Rex Ray (September 11, 1956 – February 9, 2015) was an American graphic designer and collage artist, based in San Francisco. Biography Born as Michael Patterson on September 11, 1956, on a United States Army base in Germany, and he was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Colorado Springs, Colorado. He moved to San Francisco in 1981, to attend San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) where he graduated. Early in his career he worked as a digital graphic designer for nightclubs and for music shows. He designed and performed with The Residents, as well as designed for David Bowie, among others. He changed his name to Rex Ray in order to start anew and be free of his past. Stan Dann
Stan F. Dann (born May 23, 1931 Burnaby, British Columbia, died May 8, 2013 in Lafayette, California) was a contemporary Northern California artist known for his puzzle-like bas-relief wall sculptures of polychrome wood. His earlier commercial career during the 1960s-1970s produced popular carved wooden signage, graphics and art objects. Early life Dann grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia. He graduated in 1949 from Faulkner Smith Academy of Fine Art, Vancouver. Dann attended Art Center College of Design (then in Los Angeles) receiving a BS degree with honors in 1957. He moved to Lafayette, California after graduation and became a United States citizen. After briefly working as an art director at McCann-Erickson advertising agency in San Francisco, Dann formed a boutique design group, 222, with several partners in the 1960s. Silvia Poloto is a Brazilian-born American multidisciplinary visual artist, and electrical engineer. She works in a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, and painting, and she also creates video art. Biography She was born in São Paulo, Brazil who immigrated to San Francisco, California, in 1992. She earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from University of São Paulo.
