Heart (journal)
''Heart'' is a biweekly peer-reviewed medical journal covering all areas of cardiovascular medicine and surgery. It is the official journal of the British Cardiovascular Society. It was established in 1939 as the ''British Heart Journal'' and is published by the BMJ Group. The name was changed from ''British Heart Journal'' to ''Heart'' in 1996 with the start of volume 75. The editor-in-chief is Catherine Otto (University of Washington). A sister journal, '' Open Heart'', was established in 2010 with the aim of covering cardiovascular research with less emphasis on novelty or priority. History In 2010, ''Heart'' established a sister journal, ''Heart Asia''. It was the official journal of the Asia Pacific Heart Association and aimed to focus on cardiovascular research in the Asia Pacific region. In 2019, the journal ceased publication. Catherine Otto
Catherine Mary Otto is an echocardiography specialist who serves as J. Ward Kennedy-Hamilton Endowed Chair in Cardiology at the University of Washington Medical Center. She has authored echocardiography textbooks. The major fields she works in are valvular heart disease, adult congenital heart disease, and echocardiography. Education She obtained a B.A. from Reed College in 1975, an M.D. from the University of Washington in 1979, and did her residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center from 1979 to 1982 in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at the University of Washington from 1982 till 1985. Career Otto is an expert on calcific (aortic stenosis) and received the 2011 American College of Cardiology Distinguished Scientist Award (Clinical Domain) for her research on this subject. Biweekly Journals
A weekly newspaper is a general-news or current affairs publication that is issued once or twice a week in a wide variety broadsheet, magazine, and digital formats. Similarly, a biweekly newspaper is published once every two weeks. Weekly newspapers tend to have smaller circulations than daily newspapers, and often cover smaller territories, such as one or more smaller towns, a rural county, or a few neighborhoods in a large city. Frequently, weeklies cover local news and engage in community journalism. Most weekly newspapers follow a similar format as daily newspapers (i.e., news, sports, obituaries, etc.). Walter Somerville
Walter Somerville CBE (1913–2005) was an Irish cardiologist who played a leading role in heart surgery at London's Middlesex and Harefield hospitals. For twenty years, Somerville was editor of the British Heart Journal. Early life and education Walter Somerville was born on 2 October 1913 in Clontarf, a seaside suburb of Dublin. He received his early education at the Jesuit Belvedere College in Dublin. Aged 23, he qualified in medicine, surgery and obstetrics from the city's University College in 1937. He was appointed house physician at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital where he gained a degree as Doctor of Medicine. Military service Somerville applied to join the RAF, but was instead enlisted in the army and sent to India. John Maurice Hardman Campbell
John Maurice Hardman Campbell (1891–1973) was a British physician, cardiologist, and medical journal editor. Biography After education at Winchester College, J. Maurice Campbell studied at New College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first-class honours degree in physiology. He was awarded a senior demyship at Magdalen College, Oxford and entered in 1914 Guy's Hospital Medical School, where he graduated in 1916 BM BCh (Oxon.). He joined in 1916 the RAMC, served with the rank of captain in Mesopotamia and North Persia, and was twice mentioned in despatches. Brigadier Davis Evan Bedford (1898–1978) was a British physician and cardiology, cardiologist. After education at Ipswich School and at Epsom College, D. Evan Bedford entered the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1916. The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a scientometric index calculated by Clarivate that reflects the yearly mean number of citations of articles published in the last two years in a given journal, as indexed by Clarivate's Web of Science. As a journal-level metric, it is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field; journals with higher impact factor values are given the status of being more important, or carry more prestige in their respective fields, than those with lower values.
