Hearne Academy
Hearne Academy, founded in 1881, was a school for African Americans during the post-Reconstruction era in Hearne, Texas. In 1896 it had 75 students and five teachers. It was renamed and relocated in 1909 to become Fort Worth Industrial and Mechanical College in Fort Worth, Texas. The new college was modeled after Tuskegee Institute, but it struggled financially and closed in 1929. The school was supported by Baptist organizations. It offered elementary through secondary, college preparatory, and industrial classes. R. J. Moore, a black member of the Texas House of Representatives from Washington County from 1883 to 1888, studied at Hearne Academy. Major J. Johnson was its president in 1916. Hearne, Texas
Hearne ( ) is a city in Robertson County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 4,544. The city is named for a family that settled in the area in the 19th century and promoted the construction of rail lines through the city. History Founding Hearne is located on land that initially belonged to politician and soldier José Francisco Ruiz. By the 1840s, a tavern was located there and it also served as a general store and post office. The Hearne family moved to the area in the 1850s, purchasing 10,000 acres and operating cotton plantations. Christopher C. Hearne wanted a railroad line built through the area, but the Civil War started before the railroad could be constructed. His widow later gave 700 acres to the Houston and Texas Central Railway. With the construction of a depot in Hearne in 1868, businesses began to open, including a hotel, saloons, churches and a cotton gin. Two rail lines met in Hearne by the 1870s. Tuskegee Institute
Tuskegee University (Tuskegee or TU), formerly known as the Tuskegee Institute, is a private, historically black land-grant university in Tuskegee, Alabama. Elizabeth Stumm
Elizabeth Stumm better known by her pen name Mrs. C. C. Stumm (1857-?) was an African-American teacher and journalist. As her husband was involved in missionary service, the couple moved often, but Stumm was able to work as a writer and teacher. She wrote for many newspapers and journals in the black press and was noted by numerous compilers of her day as an influential and effective journalist. Early life T. Elizabeth Penman was born on March 25, 1857, in Boyle County, Kentucky to Eliza and Thomas Penman. Her father died in her youth and her mother ensured that she obtained an education. Penman attended two terms at Berea College, before beginning a career as a journalist. In 1875, Penman married Rev. Chasteen C. Stumm, a fellow student from Berea. Soon after their marriage, Rev. Alexander Asberry
Alexander "Alex" Asberry (November 2, 1861 - abt. 1903) was a grocer, deacon, and politician who served one term in the Texas Legislature. He was born in Wilderville, Texas in 1861, the son of William and Julia Asberry. He was educated at Hearne Academy and worked in the grocery business. A Republican, he ran for a seat in the legislature in 1884 but lost. He was elected in 1888 to the Texas House of Representatives.
