Heard National Bank Building
The Heard National Bank Building was a building in Jacksonville, Florida, built in 1913. It was the tallest building in Florida for over a decade. It was demolished in 1981 and is now the site of the Bank of America Tower. History Construction on the Heard National Bank Building started in 1911. In 1913, the building was erected. Upon completion it had 15 stories, was tall, and became the tallest building in Florida. It was demolished in 1981 and replaced by the current tallest building in Jacksonville: the Bank of America Tower. The entrance columns to the former building are the only remaining parts of the structure. It is the only one of Florida's tallest buildings to be destroyed. Bank of America Tower (originally Barnett Center) is a skyscraper in the downtown area of Jacksonville, Florida, at the northwest corner of Bay and Laura streets. At , it is the tallest building in Jacksonville, and the seventeenth-tallest in Florida (the tallest ten all being in Miami). It was built as the headquarters of Barnett Bank and originally named Barnett Center, but the name was changed to NationsBank Tower in 1998 after Barnett Bank was acquired by NationsBank. NationsBank was soon acquired by Bank of America and the building's name was changed to Bank of America Tower in 1999. The 42-floor structure was designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn, and is constructed of reinforced concrete. The Laura Street Trio is a group of three historic buildings located on and near Laura Street in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. The Trio consists of two perpendicularly arranged skyscrapers, the Florida Life Building and the Bisbee Building, plus a third structure, the Old Florida National Bank (or Marble Bank), which is framed by the other two in a unique pattern. The three buildings, constructed in the wake of the Great Fire of 1901, are architecturally significant, but are currently endangered. The Barnett (originally known as the Barnett National Bank Building) is a skyscraper in the downtown area of Jacksonville, Florida, at the southwest corner of Adams and Laura streets. History The building was erected in 1926 and was Jacksonville's tallest building at the time, surpassing the Heard National Bank Building. It was designed by architecture firm Mowbray & Uffinger for Barnett Bank. It remained Jacksonville's tallest building until the construction of the building now known as the Aetna Building in 1954. The Freedom Tower ( es, Torre de la Libertad) is a building in Miami, Florida. It was designed by Schultze and Weaver and is currently used as a contemporary art museum and a central office to different disciplines in the arts associated with Miami Dade College.
