Headlands Center for the Arts hosts an internationally recognized artist-in-residence program, and interdisciplinary public programs. It is situated in a campus of artist-renovated military buildings in the Marin Headlands, in Marin County, California, United States. Anya Gallaccio
Anya Gallaccio (born 1963) is a British artist, who creates site-specific, minimalist installations and often works with organic matter (including chocolate, sugar, flowers and ice). Her use of organic materials results in natural processes of transformation and decay, meaning that Gallaccio is unable to predict the end result of her installations. Something which at the start of an exhibition may be pleasurable, such as the scent of flowers or chocolate, would inevitably become increasingly unpleasant over time. The timely and site-specific nature of her work make it notoriously difficult to document. Her work therefore challenges the traditional notion that an art object or sculpture should essentially be a monument within a museum or gallery. Harrell Fletcher
Harrell Fletcher (born 1967 in Santa Maria, California) is an American social practice and relational aesthetics artist and professor, living in Portland, Oregon. Biography Harrell Fletcher was born in 1967 in Santa Maria, California and attended Santa Maria High School. Fletcher received his B.F.A. in 1990 from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and his M.F.A. in 1994 from California College of the Arts (CCA). At CCA, Fletcher studied under Suzanne Lacy. Patricia Fernández
Patricia Fernández Carcedo (born in 1980) is a Spanish-born Los Angeles-based female artist. Career Fernández was born in Burgos, Spain, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She earned a BFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002 and a MFA from the California Institute for the Arts in 2010. Fernández is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. As part of her practice, Fernandez explores the geography, real and imagined, created and shaped by the people displaced as a result of the repression during General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in Spain. Rodney Ewing (born 1964) is an African-American interdisciplinary visual artist. He lives in New York City as of 2022, and formerly lived in San Francisco, California. Early life and education Rodney Ewing was born in 1964 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father was a Vietnam veteran, who also served 20 years in the United States Air Force. Rodney Ewing also served in the military and is a Desert Storm veteran. Ewing’s father introduced him to art through comic books. Ewing also said he went to schools that had strong art programs. Mark Dion
Mark Dion (born August 28, 1961) is an American conceptual artist best known for his use of scientific presentations in his installations. His work examines the manner in which prevalent ideologies and institutions influence our understanding of history, knowledge and the natural world. The job of the artist, according to him, is to "go against the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception and convention." Paul DeMarinis (1948) is an American visual and sound artist, specializing in electronic music composer, sound, performance, and computer-based artist. Since the 1970s he has been active in creating digital sound sculptures, one of the early innovators of sound art. He is currently a professor of art at Stanford University. Tania Bruguera
Tania Bruguera (born 1968 in Havana, Cuba) is an artist and activist who focuses on installation and performance art. She lives and works between New York City and Havana, and has participated in numerous international exhibitions. Her work is in the permanent collections of many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana.
