Hazleton Hawks
The Hazleton Hawks were a professional basketball franchise in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. The Hawks, based in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, joined the league in 1955, playing as the "Hazleton Professionals"; they were named the "Hawks" in their second season in the league. In the team's first season, the franchise went through several different lineups and two coaching changes, but later made the playoffs by signing several players who had been part of the college point-shaving scandals, including Sherman White of Long Island University, Bob McDonald of Toledo University, and Ed Warner of CCNY. With that lineup, the team was able to reach the Eastern League finals in its first season - only to lose to the Wilkes-Barre Barons in a best-of-three series. Jack Molinas
Jacob Louis Molinas (October 31, 1931 – August 3, 1975) was an American professional basketball player and a key figure in one of the most wide-reaching point shaving scandals in college basketball. Early life Molinas grew up in Brooklyn and attended Stuyvesant High School. His parents owned a bar on Coney Island. College career He attended Columbia University from 1950 to 1953 where he played basketball. In the 1952-1953 season he was the captain of Columbia's team and led the team in scoring. In 1953, he set a team record for most points scored in a game—a mark that was eclipsed a few years later by Chet Forte. Professional career The Fort Wayne Pistons drafted him third in the 1953 NBA draft and played in 32 games before the league banned him for wagering on Pistons games. John Chaney (basketball Coach)
John Chaney (January 21, 1932 – January 29, 2021) was an American college basketball coach, best known for his success at Temple University from 1982 through 2006. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Early life and playing career Chaney was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but grew up in Philadelphia. Floyd Layne is an American former basketball player and coach. He played college basketball for the City College of New York (CCNY) and was implicated in the point shaving scandal in 1951. Layne was instrumental in the team that won the NIT and NCAA championship in 1950 for CCNY. Layne played professionally in the Eastern Professional Basketball League (EPBL) from 1954 to 1963. He was selected to the All-EPBL First Team in 1955 and the Second Team in 1956. He led his team to CBA Finals appearances in 1956-57 (Hazelton) and 1961-62 (Williamsport). Floyd was instrumental in developing Nate Archibald at the Harlem Youth Center. Layne was appointed as head coach of the CCNY basketball team in 1974; he served in that role for 14 years. Fletcher C. Johnson is an American songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York. In live settings, Johnson performs with his eponymously-named three piece band. Career Fletcher C. Hugh Jesse Arnelle (December 30, 1933 – October 21, 2020) was an American basketball player and attorney. Athletics Born in New Rochelle, New York, Arnelle played football and basketball for Penn State University. He led the basketball team to the 1954 NCAA Final Four. He was named an All-American that season. Arnelle was also named to the 1954 NCAA All-Tournament team and the East Regional Most Valuable Player. Arnelle finished his Penn State basketball career as the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 2,138 points and 1,238 rebounds. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1955 NFL Draft, but chose to instead play in the NBA.
