Hazel Green Academy
Hazel Green Academy was a school in the little village of Hazel Green, eastern Wolfe County, eastern Kentucky. It was established in 1880 by a Charter from the Kentucky Legislature. The bill was introduced by a Hazel Green citizen, Senator W.O. Mize. The Founders of the school were Mize and his wife, Hazel Green merchant, J. Taylor Day, and Green Berry Swango. The first classes were held in the Hazel Green Masonic Hall, before a permanent school building was erected downtown in 1885. N. B. (Napoleon Bonaparte) Hays was the first principal. He was later the Attorney General of Kentucky. At the invitation of the Founders, in 1886, the Kentucky Christian Woman's Board of Missions (CWBM), a sisterhood of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), assumed operation of the financially ailing school. Kentucky Route 191 (KY 191) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The highway connects Campton and West Liberty with mostly rural areas of Wolfe and Morgan counties. Route description Wolfe County KY 191 begins at an intersection with KY 15 in Campton, within Wolfe County. It travels to the northeast and immediately curves to the east-northeast before it intersects the western terminus of KY 2490 (Drake Street). It curves to the north and intersects the eastern terminus of KY 1653 (Johnson Street) on a curve back to the east-northeast. It crosses Swift Camp Creek. It lies along Routes 191 and 205 northeast of the city of Campton, the county seat of Wolfe County. Its elevation is 922 feet (281 m). It has a post office with the ZIP code 41332. A post office was established as Hazle Green icin 1829, and named for the hazel shrubs prevalent in the area. The name of the post office was officially changed to its present spelling in 1889. Wolfe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,355. Its county seat is Campton. The county is named for Nathaniel Wolfe. History Wolfe County was formed on March 5, 1860, from portions of Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County and Powell County. It was named for Nathaneal Wolfe, a member of the legislative assembly. Campton, the county's seat was reportedly formed from camp town in Wolfe County. A small creek winding through Campton, Swift Creek, is named after Jonathan Swift of the legend of Swift's silver mine. Swift supposedly buried treasure in the area which has never been recovered.
